He got to my name, paused and just said 'Lewis' which is my last name. This certainly was not the only time teachers struggled with my name.

We sowed felt dollies and stuffed them with wool with the help of our teachers. Then our dads came in and we made ties and decorated them. They would slide the cup around and when they lifted the cup the dice would be all stacked on top of ecah other. So the next day during the middle of class during individual work I decide to go and talk to the teacher about it and even try to demonstrate what they did. I don't remember what my teacher said but this memory stands out to me and I have no idea why.

I was very nervous and scared as i knew no one. We all sat in a circle and introduced ourselves to our peers which made me more comfortable. Even though, the school was an hour away from my house. I had to walk with my two sister one hour to school and one hour back to my home. Therefore, most days, we were late and got beaten by wooden stick on our hand. Also, every Wednesday, we were punished if we did not know what was taught during the week. On each Wednesday, I wished to be sick, so I make an excuse and don't go to school. Since then, I don't like Wednesdays. I view Wednesday, as bad days of the week.

I recall myself feeling extremely scared having to leave my mum and engage in an environment that was unfamiliar to me in all aspects. In the end I cried as she had to forcefully remove my arms from her.

At first, not knowing the people who was going to look after me for the day and knowing when mum was coming back, it made me feel anxious but as it became a regular routine and I was given opportunities to create friendships and partnerships with peers and educators it became a lot easier and less stressful leaving mums site. It was such a caring and fun place to be, feeling nurtured and supported as I explored and identified new learning.
