"The sniper lay still for a long time nursing his wounded arm and planning escape." This quote demonstrates how injured soldiers are often left helpless to defend themselves and plan escapes. Readers may become stressed or anxious while reading because they do not know what will happen next and if he will escape safely.

"the eyes of a man who is used to looking at death." This shows that the sniper has adapted to death and the horrors of war because it is his job. He seems completely fearless as he has already seen the worst. They just kill the enemy without any morals of human life.

The sniper comes up with a plan to trick the enemy into thinking he shot him so that he would come into range for the revolver he had left. He "let the rifle drop to the street" which made the enemy think he was dead and it was safe to come out. This was very sly on the sniper's part but was necessary to get out alive and get help for his arm.

"The sniper could hear the dull panting of the motor... It was an enemy car." This comment from the narrator made the scene more tense by introducing a new conflict where the sniper would have to make a quick decision about what to do. A bad call could result in the death of the sniper.
