Wrongful convictions are extreme miscarriages of justice. When an innocent person is convicted and sentenced for a crime, he or she did not commit is a terrible experience that can ruin a person’s life, and the consequences of a wrongful conviction can have can be devastating as it, affects one’s reputation, relationships and career prospects. Furthermore, those truly guilty of the crime cannot be prosecuted as they evade justice. It is important to understand why unwarranted beliefs are adopted and to implement modifications to reduce the risk of such a miscarriage of justice. Some examples according to the Innocence’s List Canada include:

1. Eyewitness error: This occurs when a witness recognizes the wrong person as the perpetrator of a crime, due to poor memory or police tactics that suggest he or she influenced it

2. False Confessions: Sometimes innocent people confess to crimes they didn't commit because of coercion, mental illness, or a desire to please the police or get a plea deal. Often times this occurs when the witness is under severe stress and pressure.

3. Tunnel Vision: This occurs when police and prosecutors become fixated on a particular suspect or theory and ignore evidence that contradicts it. This typically occurs when there is a bias and speculation from the media and pressure from the public to resolve the case.

4. Evolution of and Errors in Forensic Science: Advances in forensic science have improved criminal investigations, but mistakes in techniques and the interpretation of evidence can lead to wrongful convictions.

5. Professional Misconduct: Police misconduct, prosecutorial misconduct, and other forms of professional misconduct can result in wrongful convictions, such as tampering with evidence, coercing witnesses, or concealing exculpatory evidence.

Guy Paul Morin was a Canadian man wrongly convicted of murdering his 9-year-old neighbor Christine Jessop in 1984. Despite physical evidence linking him to the crime, Morin was found guilty under conditions testimony and testimony and expert witnesses stated that the hair found on Christine's body matched her scalp. But in 1995, new DNA evidence showed that the skull did not actually belong to Morin, who was exonerated and released from prison. Morin's wrongful conviction has led to significant changes in the Canadian justice system, including the establishment of a DNA database and improvements in the use of expert evidence in court in the 19th century (Innocence Canada, 2022)

This image is the area of where the body of the 9-year old was located. This is important because this area was around 30 miles away from Morin's location who at the time of the murder was likely at work according to his punch card. Since this a forest/park area the murderer at would have been likely covered in debris which was not found on any of Guy's clothes
