         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>The Crime Against Kansas<br></strong>Senator Charles Sumner, who was an avowed abolitionist and leader of the Republican party, made a bitter speech called the Crime Against Kansas which blasted the murderous robbers from Missouri<br><strong>Sumner Made a Bold Statement<br></strong>Sumner declared Butler an imbecile and said, "Senator Butler has chosen a mistress. I mean the harlot, slavery." During the speech, Stephen Douglas leaned over to a colleague and said, "that damn fool will get himself killed by some other damn fool." Charles Sumner made this speech for a whole 2 days.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>- A massacre that occurred when five men were taken from their cabins and killed by John Brown and his sons.<br>- This massacre followed only days after the Sack of Lawrence.<br>-Brown and his squad went into Pottawatomie Creek, which was a pro-slavery town.<br>-They raided the houses, took people out of their homes, and killed them.<br>-As a result of the massacre the South was angry and hunted down Brown and his men<br>-His two sons were found and arrested<br>-Brown escaped to the north and was taken in by abolitionists, he was never heard from again until he made national headlines in 1859 </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>Representative Preston Brooks<br>-</strong> Southerners in the nineteenth century were raised to live by an unwritten code of honor<br>-Brooks proceeded to strike Sumner over the head repeatedly with a gold-tipped cane. <br>-The cane shattered as Brooks rained blow after blow on the hapless Sumner, but Brooks could not be stopped<br>-Charles Sumner spent years recovering from the attack.<br>-Brooks was levied a $300 fine for the assault.<br>--The violence from Kansas had spilled over into the national legislature.</div>]]></description>

The "Bibles" were named after <strong>Henry Ward Beecher </strong>who was an anti- slavery speaker who said that a rifle might be a more effective moral agent in Kansas than a Bible<br><br>Each side had guns and a passion strong enough to use them.</div>]]></description>
