The Confederate troops and Beauregard were well prepared for McDowell's brigade and were able to break the Union's line which forced the Union troops to retreat to Washington. Due to the disorganization of the Confederate troops, they were unable to chase the Union's troops and let them escape to Washington. This battle completely changed the way people in the North looked at the war. Originally, people in the North expected to be able to roll over the Confederacy without any problems, but they now saw an actual fight was on their hands. The battle also led to McDowell losing his position and being replaced with George B. McClellan.

In order for Burnside and his men to reach Lee and the other confederate forces, they had to cross a river. The only way to reach the other side, and due to miscommunication the bridges were brought late, allowing the Confederates to set up and wait for the Union. Once they crossed the river, Burnside ordered General William B. Franklin and his left wing to attack Lee from his right. This would pinch Lee, hopefully catching them off guard. Franklin had an opportunity to send 50,000 more men forward to advance, but failed to do so, because of this Jackson ordered a counterattack. In the end, the Union lost this battle, and while Burnside was willing to take the blame, people blamed Lincoln for forcing him into the position. The victory for the Confederates reassured their morale, and showed the Union that they could fight back.

After the Union had won multiple pervious battles in the war, the Confederates knew they needed a victory. Union's goal was to capture the rail center in Cornith to take control of the region, but the Confederates set up to stop them in Shiloh. When the Union army neared, the Confederate army attacked and battered the Union army. But, once the Union army received reinforcements under the command of General Buell, they launched a counterattack and pushed the Confederate forces back to Cornith. All in all, the Confederate army did stop the Union from taking Cornith easily, but it came at a great cost.

General George G. Meade, who had just taken over the army, led the Union forces while Robert E. Lee commanded the Confederate army. Lee had just won a decisive battle at Chancellorsville and decided to invade Maryland and continue marching into Pennsylvania. Hill and Ewell led the Confederate army towards Gettysburg but were met with Union forces. They pushed through them with about 9,000 casualties on each side and met up with Lee where they set up an attack. The second day of fighting started at around 4 pm and lasted seven hours. In the two days there were close to 35,000 casualties. The Confederates could feel defeat coming their way so in a final desperation attempt, 15,000 men charged into defended Union soldiers. This was known as "Pickett's Charge" and nearly two-thirds of the men died. On July 4, Lee retreated with his decimated army back to Virginia. Nearly 23,000 men for the Union suffered casualties while there were 28,000 casualties for the Confederates; it was by far the deadliest battle of the war.

The Union was not able to capture Cornith, but forced the Confederate troops to retreat from Shiloh to Cornith. This battle served as another vital Union victory in the war due to the amount of casualties and damages inflicted on the Confederate Army. In the battle, the Union lost 13,000 of their 62,000 troops, while the Confederacy lost 10,000 of their 45,000 troops. These totals accounted for the highest casualty totals inflicted in any battle so far in the war which reminded people on both sides how costly and long this war was going to turn out to be.

Jacksons attack began and it was a tactical success because they took out half of Hookers line.

In those three weeks, the Union army won all five battles, marched 180 miles, and captured about 6,000 prisoners. This was considered one of Grant's great victories.
