Do Assistive Technology High-Tech Tools Require Specialty Training for Instructors? by Crystal Corona

While reading about the Low, Mid and High-Tech tools, I questioned the instructor's training for distribution of these tools. I believe High-Tech tools (especially) are always evolving, so are there requirements for the instructor to understand the tool so they will productively explain the tool to the child(ren).

Along with what was stated in the textbook (Dell, 2017, pg. 5) that high-tech devices might require specialty training for anyone involved in using the device (including teachers, parents, and the student), IDEA requires that anyone and everyone involved in working with assistive tech. devices/services needs to be properly trained on how to use it and why it's being used otherwise it's use could become inappropriate (Providing Assistive Technology: A Legal Perspective, 2004, pg. 9).

In general, high-tech devices are more complicated to operate than low-tech and mid-tech tools, and may require more training. In the past they were considerably more expensive, but with the advent of relatively inexpensive Chromebooks, mobile tablets, and various apps, their higher cost is no longer a defining feature.

In my own experience with teaching a student who uses High-Tech tools to communicate, training is very necessary. Extensive training on one device, probably is not necessary, in my opinion, but for sure training should be involved. For example a communication device for a growing child, may need to be updated to accommodate their growing vocabulary or academic skills, if you as the teacher are not able to navigate and teach the students the new words and skills, how will the students be able to use it independently. For devices such as the example I used above, I do believe routine training would be very beneficial to parents, teachers, students, etc.

Hi Crystal!
You are so right about technology always changing--especially High-Tech tools!
IDEA defines Assistive Technology with exceptions and many rules to help a child have proper access each time, but what stood out to me the most was that IDEA requires "teaching the child to use the device; and providing training for professionals, family members, and other individuals who are “substantially involved in the major life functions” of the child (IDEA 2004, Sec. 1401(2) (F)"

Dell, Amy G.; Newton, Deborah A.; Petroff, Jerry G.. (2017). Introduction to Assistive Technology. In Assistive Technology in the Classroom: Enhancing the School Experiences of Students with Disabilities (pp. 6). Pearson Education.

Emphasis on the "and" Training the child themselves and all else who is involved gives the proper support a child is going to need as they move along with the rest of the world. They will truly never be alone and can achieve so much more success!
Through personal experience, those in direct contact with these devices receive special training through education, continuing education opportunities, and examinations. The need to understand these high-tech tools is most important to achieve ultimate success with our children. These devices, being so high-tech, are more than what they appear to be--the programming and planning for those who are able to adjust it need to know how--even if it is a simple switch to new vocabulary, or a placement of the word when teaching motor planning. Extensive training is definitely necessary to ensure utmost care and support!

Complete agree with you Crystal. It is extremely important for instructors to get frequent training on the devices the students are using. For example: there is always updates to applications that are use in iPad therefore there should be a constant training in order to keep up with technology.
