The first take away is the 21st Century Mindset. The book states it perfectly when it said, “We all have a tendency to think that the curriculum that was in place when we went to school ought to be the curriculum of today” (Fisher, Hale 2013). Our world is ever-changing, and so is our curriculum. What once worked may not work well for our students of today. Our students have been born in an era where technology is used everywhere and in any career! Classrooms of today must incorporate technology on a day to day basis. If not, teachers are doing their students a disservice of not providing them with a 21st century education. An article on Edutopia gave a list of ten signs of a 21st Century classroom. They include technology integration, collaborative environment, opportunities for creative expression, inquiry based approach, justification for answers, writing for reflection, use of problem solving for methodology, hands on learning, teacher as facilitator, and transparent assessment (Goertz, 2015). If you are implementing any of these “signs,” your classroom is headed in the right direction.

The second take away is about higher-order thinking. As we transform our classrooms into a 21st century classroom, we need to be asking those higher-order thinking questions. “Many teachers do not go beyond asking higher-order questions” (Fisher, Hale 2013). The book goes on and talks about how there is a time and place to ask those questions but also to encourage your students to ask themselves those higher-order questions. In order for students to be college and career ready, they need to start now. They need to be able to have the time in class to think deeply and intently, problem solve, think critically about creating solutions, and be able to make choices based on research that they did. By doing all of this, students will, in turn, be able to answer higher-order questions and provide logical reasoning.

The third take away is collaborative environments. Students need to be able to work well and effectively in groups with diverse members. By doing this in school, they will carry this trait into their college career, and then on into the workforce. This will include planning on the teacher’s part by figuring out how to implement small groups, triads, or table buddies into their lesson planning. However, working in pairs or groups really allows the learning to take place and for students to gain confidence.
