I'm confused about Hatsue and Ishmael's relationship. Why did she lie about kissing him to Kabou? It happened years before they had met and she ran away after the kiss. Maybe it meant something more to her?

I relate to kabou the most because I understand what it's like to be accused of something you didn't do. Although the symbolism in this novel is a little hard to grasp, one example could be all of the snow hitting San Piedro.
