The Amazon River was discovered in November, 1541 by the European explorer Francisco de Orellana, although the river people had first discovered the Amazon River thousands of years before them. The people that live on the river are called river people. There are now twenty million river people living on the Amazon River including four hundred different tribes'. Ever since the Amazon River was discovered by the Europeans it has significantly helped the people that live locally, by being a water source and food resource. The Rivers fresh water can be used for drinking, washing, watering crops and travel. Many people that live on the Amazon River make canoes for travelling out of the trees that grow along the river side. These canoes are used for fishing and different agriculture, depending on the different tribes' using it. After the indigenous tribes living on the river for thousands of years they have made houses that suit the rivers floods. It is easy for the river people to access food as the Amazon River has a great variety of fish. The River has more than 5,600 species of fish which helps attract tourists. This is why the the Amazon river has significantly helped the people that live locally.

One of the most significant environmental issues the Amazon River suffers from is deforestation, which is usually caused by human activity. Kapok trees are one of the many trees that have been extinct due to logging and cattle ranching for livestock and construction. Cattle ranching is when a landscape is cleared to make a ranch to raise animals such as sheep, cows and pigs for there meat or coats. Deforestation has impacted many animals and river tribes habitats and their way of living. Floodplains have also been deforested between 1970-2008. People in Brazil, Colombia and Peru have created ways to help prevent deforestation like making natural parks reserved for wild life, indigenous territories and creating fundraisers to get money to help find ways to discover solutions for deforestation. Deforestation has impacted the ecosystem and stopping animals way of living.
