I appreciate Kao Kalia Yangs sharing of her experiences as a Hmong person in MN. It's interesting that before she got married to a white man, it seemed that she was more insulated from racism because she was amongst family and community that shared the same experiences and understood what she was really going through.

Reading about Kao Kalia Yang's experiences with racism when eating out with her Caucasian husband and her nephew Phooj's experiences with racism in the Asian grocery story, it reminds me of how so many others encounter these painful moments on a regular basis. So many of these experiences happen via ignorance and people's inaccurate assumptions. I wonder if they truly understood the pain they cause, would they continue with their behavior? Or do people do better when they know better?

Kao Kalia Yang's story is very interesting because it highlights the struggle that an interracial couple goes through in a relationship. After marrying a white man, Yang realized that there was a huge disparity between her people and her husband's people. At first, Yang's in-laws assumed that she was marrying their son to escape her financial problems and rely on their son for financial support.
Another instance where racism was made obvious to Yang was in the bathroom at the basketball game. She consulted her husband but her husband didn't reacted as Yang had expected. He kept quiet because it was beyond his imagination. It is was something that he couldn't comprehend or discuss. It is very difficult to discuss race relations when you are in an interracial relationship. Firstly, both of you have a different perspective of the world and you perceive people differently. When Yang experienced racism for the first time in her life, she felt isolated, not from her husband but her people. She felt the pain of her people. She record her memories of her brother and cousin to relieve herself from the silence of her husband. However, she find comfort in her husband friend who is aware of racism in public facilities and the discrimination against people of color. He appears to be a good allied which he is.
It is very difficult to deny the fact that racism does not have a negative impact on people's life and relationships. If you disagree with the things I say and I would that you read Kao Kalia Yang's story and decide for yourself.
