Animation of Coraline vs Alice in Wonderland

Coraline
-Coraline is made from Stop-Motion Animation. It took 4 fours to create.

Alice in Wonderland
-Alice in Wonderland is made from hand drawn animation. It took 5 years to create.

Looking at both of these animation styles, they are both shown to use creativity and freedom. The writers and directors both have the freedom to do anything they want to do. They can choose to draw and move the characters how they want. They are both similar in the fact that the animation has freedom to do what they want to do and both types of animations take a long time to make.

The differences of the types of animation are shown that Coraline has more stops and pauses with animation while Alice in Wonderland flows smoother. Even though both films show some pauses, Coraline has more pauses and crackles because of the hand motion used to move these physical models. The animation in Alice requires drawings and can be redone over and over. Coraline can only do a certain amount of takes without moving the physical model too much while Alice can be redrawn over and over to follow the previous drawing.

Messages/Lessons of Coraline and Alice and Wonderland

Coraline
In Coraline, the main lessons are being grateful for what you have and having the courage to do things that are uncomfortable. Also, a minor theme is a theme of growing up that puts all the lessons together. Early on in the movie we already see the young Coraline not caring too much and not appreciating the parents that she has, this relates to the younger side of people that are lackadaisical that don't care about much but themselves, and Coraline is not that different from others. As the movie goes along and especially at the end of the movie, Coraline gains the courage to do things that she normally wouldn't do. This goes along with growing up because along the way of life you gain the courage to do things such as go to school, speak in front of an audience, or make new friends. She then becomes grateful for her parents after she nearly loses them, and makes her realize how much her parents mean to her. Coraline is a great movie about learning lessons, that help you grow up.

Alice in Wonderland
Alice in Wonderland doesn't have as many messages as Coraline to me, but it does follow the same theme as Coraline, as throughout the movie Alice goes through the sign of growing up such as puberty, making new friends, and the struggle of kids living in a world with adults. Near the beginning of the movie, when Alice falls down the rabbit hole we get introduced to when she eats the side of the mushroom that makes her grow taller and the other side that makes her smaller. This was supposed to simulate growing up and puberty. She then meets the Mad Hatter and other people that she is introduced to, and at first she doesn't like but later on in the story they are her new friends that she makes. This shows us that at first we might not live people but they can become great friends. In a world full of adults she gets to learn that being young is what's best for her right now, as growing up is confusing but its necessary.

The difference between the cat in Coraline and the cat in Alice and Wonderland is prevalent in the sense of their antagonistic/protagonist behavior. The Alice and Wonderland cat is deceitful, he associates himself in the world Alice falls into. While Coraline's cat associates himself in Coraline's original world. Because of this. Alice and Wonderland's cat becomes more of a loose guide and a deceiver, almost plays a chaotic neutral character. Though Coraline's cat would fall somewhere on Neutral Good or Neutral True. Coraline's cat also plays as a voice of reason with wisdom. While Alice's cat plays around with her.

A personal connection I have to the story of Coraline is her curiosity to explore and find whats out there. We first see Coraline exploring her house in the beginning of the movie. She explores different rooms of her house and explores the outside world. As a child, I was always adventurous with exploring my own world. I was always interested with instruments, cars, and how things worked as a child. Showing this picture of me as a child, I always loved instruments and using them. i loved exploring new things as a child. I feel like I relate to Coraline on her level of curiosity of the world.

My personal connection to Coraline is that I am kid-like too and tend to take advantage of things and not be grateful for things that are in my life, especially my parents. As I grew older like Coraline as she goes along through the movie, I realized how much my parents meant to me. My thought of my parents went from not being grateful, to be so grateful that I had them and didn't deserve them, but I needed them. Coraline develops a love for her parents throughout the movie because she almost experiences losing them, I haven't experienced that but I would assume it is traumatizing and would make me love them even more.

The connection I share with Coraline, during my childhood, is our irrationality. I remember when I was a goofy little ball of innocent flesh and bones. When Coraline would go all about flowers during the hard rain and the ungratefulness of dinner time. I remember all too well when I wanted to go outside in the rain or didn't want to eat my mother's cooking.

The the evil mom was able to spy on Coraline Through The Button Eyes of the doll but these guys also have another purpose as we saw later in the movie: they would allow the evil mom to completely control her as well as her perception, they would also give her power and strength from the eyes she took from the other little children. This allowed her to create the fake reality.

This is similar to Alice in Wonderland because it takes place in a dream state, a place where reality and the laws of the universe don't apply. She sees and experiences many bizarre things, and In a similar way to Coraline when she's finally awoken and returned to the consistent and predictable reality she notices small traces of the illusion.

The ending of both of these films despite rational reason arguing otherwise really makes you think and wonder what if? They spark your imagination and encourage creativity.
