Consider these questions in your response:
What does the character say? How do they say it? Why do they say it? How do we feel as a result?

What: "The God of heaven forgive me" and "I almost began to think that I was the monster that he said I was". The tone is distressing and depressing. How: She says it as if she wishes she do it all over again and change the outcome. She talks in a way that sounds like she does not want to die because she knows she is innocent, but she will die because that is what people want. Why: She says it to confirm to Elizabeth that she didn't do it (almost so she can die with a clear consience). She says it to explain her feelings of gratitude toward Victor and Elizabeth. She explains why she is thankful toward them. How we feel: We feel sympathetic toward her because we don't feel what she is or feel what she feels but we don't like what is going on.

Victor says how sad and sorrowful Justine's situation makes him feel. Justine praises Victor before confirming her innocence.
The way Justine talks to Victor shows how happy she is to see her friend for the first time in years. Yet she is also upset because she does not want him to believe that she is the murderer of his brother.
Victor describes his anguish because he uses it as an excuse for why he is not owning up to his crime. Justine makes sure Victor knows her innocence because she does not want him to resent her.
This makes us feel angered at Victor's cowardice because even though he says he is sad and cares for Justine, he will not
take the punishment he deserves. Justine is innocent and does not deserve to die and Victor is somewhat willing to let her die.

<var>Tone: heartbreaking, guilty</var>
Victor is describing how Justine looks before the trial, and since he knows that the creation is the murderer, he uses words like "confident in innocence" and "kindness which her beauty might otherwise have excited" to show the beauty of Justine but by using such positive adjectives, it makes it seem as if Victor is trying to convince us that even if he knew that the creature was the murderer and that he stayed silent, he sympathizes Justine and it breaks his heart to let her die in such a cruel way. The quote is beautiful, but as a result, we feel angry and annoyed that he still tries to explain and cover for himself during Justine's trial which ends with an execution, which wouldn't have happened if he said something. But Victor was too selfish and self-absorbed to see that he killed a person. We could say that Justine was basically murdered by Victor.
