I don't think Nick is questioning his sexuality, but only because during this time period it was kind of unheard of and looked down upon so much that things like compulsive heterosexuality could be very prominent in people who were LGBTQ so they might not even consider that their sexuality may be anything other than straight in the first place. There does seem to a strong connection between Gatsb and Nick so far though, whether it be romantic or not. I don't think Nick knows himself, I think he's trying to fake it untils he makes it, so he's trying to fake knowing himself until he finds himself. He's kind of lying to himself like how in the first chapter he talks about how he's the "least judgemental person you'll meet" when we can see that's not true, he's trying to seem like he knows himself when in reality he probably doesn't.

I think Nick admires Gatsby because he seems like one of the most genuine and honest people he's met so far. Other characters we've seen throughout the book seem to have an air of dishonesty around them or just that they're not letting other people see the true them. We can see this in areas such as Tom having an affair or Jordan's general mysterious aura.

Even if Nick was anything other than straight, I don't believe that he would ever question himself or acknowledge that due to internalized homophobia. As a character, Nick seems extremely curious about the lives of those around him which is directly stated on page 57. This leads me to believe that he wants to see where he fits in.

How does the author portray Jordan Baker in chapter three?
She is portrayed as a person who constantly has the desire to be ahead of everyone else, even if that means she has to lie and cheat to achieve that goal. It seems that she lies and cheats often without any sense of remorse. When Nick makes the remark, "Dishonesty in a woman is a thing you never blame deeply—I was casually sorry, and then I forgot," he - whether or not he knows it - is being somewhat misogynistic toward Jordan and women in general. This showcases that his feelings toward women are that they are plainly "objects" or "lesser beings" and displays to the reader a bit of the deep-rooted assumptions he has about women.

Why do you think Gatsby has large parties with people who don’t know him and have never met him?
Gatsby's parties indulge their guests in a surplus of meaningless items and excess. Because of this, people Gatsby's house as more of a public space for everyone rather space rather than his personal home. This can connected to the indecency of younger people with large amounts of money. The meaningless excess of his parties goes to further call attention to Gatsby's loneliness from any of his real friends. Like Jordan says, "Large parties are great because they provide privacy and intimacy." This allows us to see just how much Gatsby remains alone in large groups of people he barely knows while they have their own private moments among each other.

The wealth of these men is unimaginable and Nick is showing the contrast between how rich individuals navigate the world. It is intriguing to Nick and well as to us the reader because the contrast is so prominent. In terms of Nick's intrigue with Jordan, I think anyone would be interested in her due to her mannerisms in the world. She is an independent woman which is sadly rare for the time. I think because of her individuality, Nick zooms in on Jordan and her uniqueness as a woman. I suppose due to his wealthy status, Nick might be used to "good girls" and women who are pinnacles of prim and proper, Jordan is a breath of fresh, different air.

Homophobia was normalized and molded into society and because of this, Nick opening questioning doesn't seem the most realistic.

Taking a different approach to the last questions, I don't think Nick knows himself in relation to the statements he makes about himself. That he doesn't judge people, that he is one of the the most honest people he knows. When Nick goes against what he's claimed about himself, he isn't catching it. It is possible that the reason he got away with it is that the police got to go. I'm not sure that he likes the attention because he doesn't even introduce himself to his guests. It's honestly hard to imagine someone throwing parties for tons of people and expecting nothing in return. Like they are trashing his mansion, doing illegal things, and drinking all his booze, all without thanks. I can't think of anyone that would do that today. I also can't imagine how much money that would cost, Gatsby has to have some outrageous amount of money.

In response to Sammy Finch's post:
Wow! That was great insight. It's interesting to me that you talk about Nick faking it until he makes it. That's a common phrase, but I've never thought of it in terms of knowing yourself. I think I pretend to know myself in essays a lot haha. I think it's also something to note that Nick's passiveness is also a result of not knowing himself. He doesn't recognize his opinions on things, so he doesn't feel comfortable speaking out against them. Nick described himself as a politician in Chapter 1 and I think that is a fair description. I think of the moment in Hamilton when Hamilton looks at Aaron Burr and goes "If you stand for nothing Burr, what do you fall for?" I think what Nick is going to learn is that if he doesn't speak up, he's going to get nowhere.

Do you believe Nick questions his sexuality? Do you think Nick knows himself? Is he trying to find himself?
I agree with Sammy and Madison that Nick does not know himself. Like many people, I think Nick lives as the person he believes he should be to meet societal expectations, rather than the person he is. However, I do think he is trying to find himself. Nick has placed himself in a situation that is uncomfortable. He is learning a new job and existing in entirely new social circles in a new environment where his family name does not carry as much significance as it might in his hometown. For these reasons I think Nick is redefining who he is. I also think Nick is questioning his sexuality. Despite the time period or societal norms, I think most people question their sexuality at some point.

How does the author portray Jordan Baker in chapter three?
Jordan is portrayed as a woman who is defying the societal norms of the 1920s. She represents a woman's role being redefined. For this reason, Nick takes interest in her. In earlier chapters, her character is placed in contrast with Daisy. Jordan has carved a nontraditional path for herself that has allowed her independence that Daisy is not afforded.

But there are multiple moments throughout the book which show that even if Nick doesn't completely understand how he is feeling, he is questioning something. For example, at the very end of chapter 2 he blacks out and it seems as though something might have happened then. Also in chapter 3 the way Nick describes Gatsby's smile seems to be more than friends. Nick might not completely understand these feelings, but I definitely think that he is feeling something other than being straight.

Overall, she lives a life of wealth and is okay with living her life freely and without consequence. But no one can be 100% honest 100% of the time. He isn't "judgmental" but he does hold others to higher standards than himself. And like Paige said, he can be bias. While narrating its his job to tell the story correctly, and he does a pretty good job of it so far.

Responding to the question "Do you believe Nick questions his sexuality? Do you think Nick knows himself? Is he trying to find himself". While it is possible that Nick is something other than straight, I highly doubt it because of the time period. I agree with what Jessica said that "Homophobia was normalized and molded into society". It would be very hard for him to even question it, and if he did know it would be hard to come to terms with it and how to move forward. With that I do not believe that Nick knows himself/ he is trying to to find himself. He talks about himself as a very passive/submissive person who is "not judgmental" when in reality he definitely is a little bias.

Probably not, but what young aged man truly knows himself during this time frame?

While outwardly we can see that he is very honest and hold people accountable, he doesn't quite do the same with himself. I feel like he is struggling with who he is, therefore he is afraid to truly be honest internally, so he feels that he needs to constantly be honest on the outside to make up for it.
