Emma, the character, comes off as what I would think is exactly how Austen wanted her to be. As for Volume 1 as a whole, I feel that this is the setup for the rest of the novel, in the same way that "A New Hope" sets us up for the next two movies. As I said before though, this book is a product of its time, back in a time where apparently humans had longer retention spans. As a consequence of this, I find it difficult to distinguish side characters in Emma from a plain brick wall.
