While we addressed and discussed a wide variety of issues that impact our classrooms, all of them came back to the central idea of how we as teachers can improve our practice in order to meet the needs and improve the educational experience of all students.

Wu and Kilpatrick offered multiple perspectives of standards-based reform, a topic that is still very relevant today. This debate challenged the reader to consider the history of mathematics education, as well as its future, while calling into question the purpose of mathematics in the classroom. Regardless of who "won" the debate, or one's own personal beliefs about mathematics curriculum, these articles provided an avenue to examine advantages and disadvantages of standards-based reform, and ultimately to consider what is best for all students as learners.

The study of the Amber Hill and Phoenix Park schools analyzed course structure and the resulting student achievement, comparing a "traditional" vs. a project-based approach. The evidence from this study showed more success overall with a project-based, more student-centered approach. With this type of approach, the mathematics becomes more meaningful as well as more accessible to all students, not just those with a specific skill set.

It is important to have goals and set standards in mathematics, and equity needs to be addressed while mapping them out. In order to make those goals attainable for all students, student experiences - both cultural and social - must be considered in order to provide all students with an equal opportunity to be successful.
