Areas of a city devoted to where people live rather than to commercial or industrial functions are called residential zones.Different types of zones appeal to different types of people. The inner city in the United states is the residential zone with the highest population density. As you move to the zones further from the city the population density significantly decreases. This is known as residential density gradient. A very noticeable feature in Suburbs are large single detached housing, unlike the living spaces in the city. The city takes up the image of tall buildings and tiny apartments while the suburbs are seen as a more open space and larger houses.

Neighborhoods undergo transformations over time as existing residents move out and new ones move in.A process known as filtering, houses pass from one social group to another. The term invasion and succession refers to the process by which one social or ethic group gradually replaces another through filtering. Rise in gated communities is an example of changes in suburbs and sometimes in cities. Suburbanization of business is the movement of commerce out of cities to suburbs where the rent is cheaper and commutes for employees is shorter.

The residential density gradient outside of the U.S. is much different . Population density is higher in the suburbs rather than Urban areas (cities). An example is Europe, where many historical structures are present in the midst of the cities. The leads to multi-story apartments on the outskirts of cities. In turn, creating high population density outside the city. In Latin America you can also see the pattern of low density suburbs, but instead of cities you may find high density squatter settlements.

One solution to the problem of this legal fragmentation is the consolidation of the city and county governments. Many of the cities have created special districts that attempt to solve a specific need over a larger region. Some populated regions do not fall within the legal boundary of any city or municipality.
