WALTER LEE: Ruth loves Walter very much and wants him to be happy, but they are both tired and it affects their interactions with each other. For example, in the morning Travis asks his mother for 50 cents. However, she doesn't give him any money "'Cause we don't have it" (Hansberry 30). Walter walks in and wants to give Travis the money because he doesn't want to admit that they're poor. "He hands the boy the coin, but his eyes are directed to his wife's" (Hansberry 31). He only gave Travis the money to spite his wife. Both Ruth and Walter want something more for their family, but Walter wants to invest in a liquor store, while Ruth is wary of the people he wants to invest with. However, shes does support him and his dream. She even mentions it to Mama for him, saying, "It's just that he got his heart set on that store-" (Hansberry 41). She really wants what's best for the family but she also believes in Walter even if she doesn't believe in his friends, Willie and Bobo.

MAMA: Sometimes Mama tries to tell Ruth how to mother Travis, like asking her "What did you fix him for breakfast this morning?" (Hansberry 40), even annoying her to the point where she becomes "furious" (Hansbberry 41). However, Mama really loves Ruth like she was her own daughter. Mama tries to comfort her, like when she says, "Now you just relax. That's right...just lean back, don't think 'bout nothing at all" (Hansberry 60). She wants what's best for her and for her to be happy. An example is when she says, "Girl, you better start eating and looking after yourself better" (Hansberry 41).

BENEATHA:
Even though they are not connected by blood, Ruth and Beneatha are like real sisters, bickering and all. Ruth even tells her, "Don't be so nasty, Bennie" (Hansberry 36), but also defends her from Walter when he's being pessimistic about Bennie's dream to be a doctor. Ruth tells her husband, "Walter Lee, why don't you leave that girl alone and get out of here to work?" (Hansberry 36).

TRAVIS: Ruth cares for Travis very much, and her dream is for him to live a good life

Ruth desires a good life for her family, and Walter knows it. He even points it out, saying, "You tired, ain't you? Tired of everything... the way we live- this beat up hole- everything" (Hansberry 32). She tells him she'd "rather be living in Buckingham Palace" (Hansberry 34), where she and the rest of her family can live happily and peacefully.

Ruth is a hardworking mother, wife, sister-in-law, and daughter-in-law. She goes to work and "has to go out of here to look after somebody else's kids" (Hansberry 71). She is about 30 years old, but is very beautiful. However, her life has been hard, and "disappointment has already begun to hang in her face" (Hansberry 24). She appears tired and weary.

There are many obstacles Ruth has had to deal with, but the most recent one is that she is pregnant, and can't afford to keep the baby. She struggles with the decision while her relationship with Walter only grows more bitter. Lastly, money and motivation has been an obstacle for her. Without money, she can not afford the dream she desires, which is for her family to have a good life. She has realized that her life will not advance any further, thus making her not motivated, "but now it is apparent that
life has been little that she expected" (Hansberry 24).
