Paul D was a former slave who worked on a Sweet home which was a slave plantation. Paul D was abused and mistreated while he worked on the plantation and still has traumatizing memories from his time there. Pual D Attempts to leave sweet home with Sixo, a fellow slave at the plantation and Sixo ends up getting caught and burned alive over a fire as a message along with punishment for acting and speaking out. After Pual attempted to escape he was punished by being sent to a labor camp and had a metal bit forced into his mouth like a horse as a form of torture. At the labor camp in Georgia, Pual continued to have traumatizing experiences. At the camp, he was locked together with hundreds of other prisoners and was abused by the jailers in sexual ways. One day when rained and the jail became muddy Paul was able to slip out of the jail and escape the labor camp. Paul then migrated to the north with hopes of a better life and finding Sethe, a fellow inmate at Sweet home back in Kentucky. When Paul D finally makes into freedom up north in Cincinnati where Sethe lives (124) he still remains deeply affected by his terrible past.

"He would keep the rest where it belonged: in that tobacco tin buried in his chest where a red heart used to be. Its lid rusted shut" (86)

This is a defining quote about Paul D because it describes how he feels about his terrible past working on Sweet Home along with how he deals with his emotions. Instead of a heart Paul D keeps his memories and experiences from when he was enslaved in this tobacco tin. These tragic experiences permanently shaped the person Paul D is today. Morrison adds that its lid is rusted shut to show that Paul doesn't like to open up about what he went through and chooses to keep these personal stories to himself. The tin being a Tobacco tin is likely a reference to the tobacco fields that Paul worked on while he was enslaved.
