Ray Unit 2: Perspective by Ray Chen

The purpose of this Padlet is to keep track of your learning for Inside Out and Back Again. More specifically, the notes you record are meant to prepare you for the summative assessments.

There are three summative assessments for this unit: the fishbowl discussions, the literary essay and your exhibition project.

Tip: Stay organized by color coding and adding titles to your notes.

People believe wearing yellow and red can bring them good luck. Making food together you gather with your family and talk to each other about the year. They pray to commune with their departed loved ones. Ha has a special papaya tree and this means a lot to her, it brings wealth and things to her. Tran hung dao is a street in Vietnam, this district wasn’t effected still in 1960, then after 15 years the street became more effected. Communism was spreading around. France colonized Vietnam for a pretty long time. This effected some of their food and customs. Hoi chi min really likes communism and wants to bring this back to Vietnam. Hoi chi min defeated France and one of the two Vietnams became communism. North Vietnam is communism, south Vietnam is democratic. Domino theory: If communism effected one of the countries, then more and more countries would become communism, so USA tried to stop it. The south Vietnam president doesn’t like Buddhists and suddenly no one likes him. Buddhists lit themselves on fire to protest and it spread around the world so much. Then the south president was murdered by someone in his own team. The north fired a missile to the US boat and this angered the US. They were officially in. A lot of American troops came to fight this Vietnam war. But they aren’t trained to fight in mountain and grass places. The war started and schools and shops closed down. If shops were open the price were enlarged which caused poverty. Then the south president just left to America. Then all the American staff went back to America. The north then took over the south. The south people moved to China Hong Kong but were not let in because they weren’t communist.

Boat people
Boat people might want to leave Vietnam or want to go back to Vietnam and their homes. They might feel very hopeless when they don’t have a lot of food and still have a long journey. The boat people might think that they might be in danger because of the sea or the northern army. They were the last to evacuate. Saigon couldn’t leave by ship or plane. Boat people are majority of refugees.

US
The US people might want to get the Vietnam people out of there for their safety also for the Vietnam peoples safety. They might also want to rescue more Vietnam people because they teamed up with Vietnam. They might feel safe that they have done what they can do and now escorting Vietnam people out into different countries. They might think that they already has helped Vietnam and they might think they have done what they could do. Operation frequent wind. Indo-China refugee migration act 1975.

Ha
Ha might want to go to another safe country for her and her family together. Ha might also want to make his family more happy. Ha feels more safe now because they are in a safe area and she might feel sad for her brother. Her brother just got his chick killed and is very sad about that. Ha might think that she will be better I’m another place without war and without anything. Also she might think if they moved their family can be more safe and happy. Also wish her father to come back. Ha has became more mature.

Mother
The mother might want the family to be more happy once they have moved and for the brothers to have more education. She might also want them to be able to survive well enough that they don’t need to ration a piece of potato. The mother might feel the family is depressed now and want them to be better. She might also feel that her family is poor because they live in this time where other children don’t have to experience this, also they are without a father. The mother might think after they go to France their life would become better and become more normal than before. She has decided to leave for France for her family.

Brother Quang
Brother Quang might want to help more Vietnam people by translating and also want their family to be safe as the biggest kid in the family. Brother Quang might feel helpful on Guam because he is translating and helping people in his country. At the same time he also feels very not loyal because they just left like that. They left the country also left the father being able to find them. Brother Quang might think he would want to help people translate. Once they get to France, brother Quang could help his family more with translating. He is the most reluctant to move and doesn’t want to abandon Vietnam.
