We just plain working folks.” P. 41.

This quote shows Mama's way of thinking when it comes to her family. She says that she has given up on things because she already realized what she has. Throughout the story, Mama does so much and gives everything she can to ensure the happiness of her family. She's given her family everything she has, down to her last dime - literally.

Mama has had this plant for a very long time, and she still waters it and gives it sun in hopes that it will start growing. Mama feels that this plant shows who she is, and she is not willing to give up on it.

Mama, in my opinion, is a very good person. She makes unbelievable sacrifices for her family, and everything she does is for them. She always has her head on straight, making sure she and everyone else are on the correct path. There is something about Mama that makes me like her, maybe it's the way she cares for everyone else. I do sympathize with Mama because she deserves so much more than she receives. Mama is the kind of person everyone should have in their life.

This picture makes me think of Mama. When I see this picture, I think of every sacrifice Mama has made in order for her family to have everything they want and need. In this picture, you can see a women who looks like she is the main reason for the wildlife going on around her. Mama, in this case, would be that women. Mama has given Walter and Ruth's family a place to live, and has also has given Beneatha the ability to reach her goal of becoming a doctor. She does great things that allow others to thrive, which is what I think the women in this picture represents.

Give out of love, not obligation.
Give when it’s least expected.
Give without strings attached.
Give from your heart.
Give to show that you care.
Give something that takes personal sacrifice.
Give to make a difference.
Give without keeping score.
Give a little if you can’t give a lot.
Give of your experience.
Give to those who need it most.
Frank Sonnenberg

This poem by Frank Sonnenberg relates to Mama and the way she is so giving. In line 5, it talks about giving to show that you care. In the story, Walter felt that no one cares or believed in him and his dream of owning a liquor store. Mama, who Walter begged for money to get his dream started, decided to give him the money solely because she believed he could do everything he said he was going to. Also, the last line of this poem which talks about giving to those who need it most can represent Mama. When the Younger family discovered that Ruth was pregnant, Mama took most of her money and spent it on a bigger house for her and her growing family. There could not be a better poem to represent Mama because this one literally lists all the ways in which Mama is giving.

I was raised, it come across my plate then I better swing
I just need me some stockings and the chimney they could hang from
Photos so my kids can find out where they got their names from
What's the point of gaining chicken if you lose all the sauce?
What's the point of gaining chicken if it can't get across?

These few lyrics from the song 'The Man Who Has Everything' by Chance The Rapper, can really relate to Mama. "I was raised, it come across my plate then I better swing" connects with Mama's childhood, and how when she was younger everyone would tell her that she aimed too high, but that's just who she is and how she was raised. "Photos so my kids can find out where they got their names from" This line of the song shows the part of the story when Mama had to remind Walter of just how far they have come and she reminded him that he should never forget how hard his father worked to get them where they are now. "I just need me some stockings and the chimney they could hang from" this line of the song can relate to how Mama feels about her house. She always wanted a nice house with a garden and a yard, but instead she got a 2 bedroom apartment that she is okay with because her family is there with her. "What's the point of gaining chicken if you lose all the sauce? What's the point of gaining chicken if it can't get across?" Last but not least, these lyrics perfectly exemplify how Mama feels towards Walter when he talks about wealth and wanting so much more than what he's got. Mama feels as if he isn't appreciative of what he already has and he takes it all for granted. What's the point of all the money if you already have everything you need?

Post 8 - Theme - Fences/A Raisin In The Sun

In these two plays, there are very similar themes. One of them we can compare is 'keep working towards a goal, even if people want to take it away'. In 'Fences' The father, Troy, wants to snatch away from Corey, his son, the ability to play football in college. Corey works very hard to keep his grades up, have a job, and play football, but his Dad believes he should quit the team and do something more realistic in his life. This theme can be connected with the character Beneatha from 'ARITS'. Beneatha's entire family doubts her dream of becoming a doctor. Like Corey playing football for the NFL, Beneatha becoming a doctor is far fetched in everyone's eyes. People tell her she is crazy for believing she can become a doctor, especially because she is a woman. The only thing that is the same for Beneatha and Corey, is that they still worked hard for their dreams even though others doubted them.
Another theme that is prevalent in both 'ARITS' and 'Fences' is racism or injustice. In 'ARITS', The Younger family is asked to sell their house in a predominately white neighborhood because they are black. The family fights back and decides to move into the house anyway. In 'Fences' Troy didn't drive the trash truck and it was because he was black. He decided to take a stand to his boss and ask if he could receive a promotion to drive the truck instead of standing on the back. In both of the plays, they fought back at the racist actions made against them.
