Causes like small populations, limited railways, risk of being taken over by the U.S, and Britain wanting to be more self-sufficient were all things that led up to the Confederation. John A. MacDonald wanted to build a railway so transportation is easier, connect the provinces in Canada, and so the U.S doesn't take British Columbia. This is also helpful for trades and defending against the U.S. The problems that came up with this was they broke the Royal Proclamation by expanding westward and buying Rupert’s land without discussing with the people already living there, like the Métis.

The Métis formed a Provisional Government to protect their land. They didn't wanna have fights but instead, a fair negotiation with the Canadian Government. The execution of Thomas Scott was because he was very antagonistic, enraging many English protestants, so John A. MacDonald excluded Louis Riel from power. Louis Riel plans to seize the HBC so that Canada doesn’t take over the land. He did this to try to get peoples attention and so they will hear the Métis voices. After this, the Manitoba Act was signed for Métis people to receive their promised land but it was unprepared and so the indigenous got paper scrips instead. The claim for land took way longer than expected (3-5yrs) so people started to sell their scripts for money.

The economic depression led to many settlers moving west instead of east. They were all English protestants which caused tension against the Métis and French Catholics, this impacted both sides by a lot. The Métis petition for land recognition were ignored, so they sent messengers to the U.S to ask Riel for help. Riel agreed because he thought it would help him so he worked with Gabriel Dumont, a respected military leader. When the government also ignored their demands, the Métis seized a parish church. The resistance unfolded over serval months, fighting escalated as government forces clashed with Métis and indigenous fighters. After this, Riel surrendered and was arrested, his trial was very unfair due to the jury made up of entirely English-speaking protestants and many other factors that makes Riel hard to win.
