         <title>Making Oxygen in Submarines (Kevin)</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>Oxygen in submarines is produced by putting sea water through a process of electrolysis. Submarines typically have a couple of big oxygen tanks as well, used to quickly raise oxygen concentration if the system fails. Actually, normally oxygen concentration is slightly lower in the submarine than it would be on the land. This allows for reducing the risk of spreading fires.          <description><![CDATA[<p>Photosynthesis is the process by which green plants and some other organisms use sunlight to synthesize foods from carbon dioxide and water. Photosynthesis in plants generally involves the green pigment chlorophyl and generates oxygen as a byproduct. The standard formula for photosynthesis is 6CO2 + 6H2O → C6H12O6 + 6O2. This indicates that six carbon dioxide and six water molecules, which are the reactants, are transformed into a sugar molecule and six oxygen molecules, which are the products, by light energy that chlorophyll (shown by the arrow) absorbs. This reaction is a single displacement. </p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>The chemical formula for rust is FE203 and is commonly known as iron oxide. Iron rusting requires both water and oxygen. Iron rusting involves a process called corrosion. It is the slow eating up of metals by gas and water vapours present in the atmosphere due to the formation of certain compounds like oxide, sulphides, carbonate, etc. When iron comes into contact with oxygen in the presence of moisture (water), a reddish brown coating is formed on the surface of iron called rust. The standard chemical reaction for iron rusting is 4Fe(s) + 3O2(g) + 2x H2O(aq) -&gt; 2FE2O3 + H2O. This is a oxidation reaction. </p>]]></description>

Iron molecules react with oxygen molecules to form the compound iron oxide. Oxidisation is when a chemical gains oxygen or loses hydrogen and the atoms lose electrons. Corrosion occurs when most of the outer atoms on a metal surface oxidise, which forms the rust. This easily happens to metals because they lose electrons often because of air or water. </p>]]></description>
