What Makes a Quality Text?

There are several things to look for when choosing texts. Quality texts have the following traits; engaging pictures, credible sources, interesting facts, and simple layouts to aid with comprehension. Quality texts might also have back matter, glossaries, an index, and more resources for more information.

This text set will be used in my classroom for my 6th grade students to work in collaborative research groups. Each group will choose an animal that was used in the military and then research that animal using the resources I have provided in this text set. Every group will then give a presentation to the class of their findings.

The following Common Core Standards will be supported in this project: *CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.6.2
Write informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas, concepts, and information through the selection, organization, and analysis of relevant content.
*CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.6.8
Gather relevant information from multiple print and digital sources; assess the credibility of each source; and quote or paraphrase the data and conclusions of others while avoiding plagiarism and providing basic bibliographic information for sources.
*CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.6.9
Draw evidence from literary or informational texts to support analysis, reflection, and research.

There are many different text features in the texts I have provided, amazing pictures, and credible sources. The texts have various reading levels and some of them are even able to be read aloud by the electronic device the students are using.

Many of these resources include information about the same animals; so it will be great for my students to interact with similar concepts presented in different ways.
