The action or process of closely monitoring something or someone.
Advantages-
Observations can be used when questionnaires or interviews are inappropriate.
Real life situations.
Good for explaining meaning and context.
Can be a valid and in-depth understanding.
Disadvantages-
Subjective.
Time consuming.
Depends on the role of researcher.
Overt: effect the validity of findings.
Covert- ethical procedures contravened.
Role conflict of practitioner researchers.

considerations- observations in EYFS is a method that is used continually throughout a child's development and is most reliable.
observations are ethical as it monitors children's abilities.

 An interview meeting of people face to face, especially for consultation.
Reasons for using interviews:
- To investigate issues in an in depth way.
- To discover how individuals think and feel about a topic and why they hold certain opinions.
- Add a human dimension to impersonal data.
Advantages of interviews:
- They are useful to obtain detailed information about personal feelings, perceptions and opinions.
- They usually receive a high response rate.
- They allow more detailed questions to be asked.
Disadvantages of interviews:
- They can be very time consuming: Setting up, interviewing, transcribing, analysing, feedback, report.
- They can be costly
- Different interviewers may understand and transcribe interviews in different ways.
- Forgetting context or what has been asked and said during interview.
Considerations:
- (Ethics) A lot of consent is needed and this can be time consuming.
- (Validity)  Not always going to be correct because you are asking for peoples opinions.
- (Objectivity) Can always be bias or unfair due to the nature of opinions and peoples suggestions. Each person has their own voice.
- (Reliability)   Its difficult to rely on people because circumstances change, people may not be available when needed. However, interviews are quick and simple to complete and so results can be obtained very easily.
