Stage 1: Trust vs. Mistrust

- The trust vs. mistrust stage is very important so that the child has a positive outlook on the world and their surroundings.
- In my life, I have faced a lot of times where I've needed to decide if I was going to trust someone or not. One example of this is when I was an infant. I had to trust my parents to take care of me. I did and now I have a great relationship with both of them.
- The textbook states"The critical element in developing trust is sensitive, responsive, consistent caregiving." (130). It also says "If mistrust predominates, children will view the world as unfriendly and unpredictable and will have trouble forming quality relationships." (130)

Stage 2: Autonomy vs. Shame and Doubt

- This stage normally starts around 18 months old and lasts until they are about 6 years old. Toddlers begin to listen to their caregivers' judgment instead of their own. While children continue to grow, they are able to tell people what they want easier. This causes them to become more independent. Toddlers need to have certain rules/standards to follow and to know not to go over the limit of what is set by adults. In this stage, children develop a better understanding of self-control.
- I grew up eating decently healthy foods so when given a choice between sweets or fruit for snacks, I would almost always choose fruit. I would solve this with autonomy because I would make the choice of what I wanted to have as a snack that day.
- The book states, "Toddlers need adults to set appropriate limits, and shame and doubt help them recognize the need for those limits." (135). This can provide information to the reader so that they can understand that rules are set by adults but children are given the choice to follow them.

Stage 3: Initiative vs. Guilt

- In this stage, children want to start doing more than they used to while also learning that they need to ask someone before doing it. Needing approval from an adult is needed to keep the child, and others, safe. Children learn to understand that they can learn/do new things but they need to understand that there could be bad outcomes that they should think about before they continue.
- When I was younger, I didn't learn how to ride my bike until later but when I was ready, I took initiative to learn as fast as I could. When I was visiting family, my aunt taught me how to ride it. We would go outside every night until I was able to ride it without training wheels.
- "Toddlers need adults to set appropriate limits, and shame and doubt help them recognize the need for those limits."

- In this stage, children learn how to work hard and the possibility of feeling inferior. Children need to learn how to contribute to society or in their family or risk feeling inferior. Children need praise in order to continue to have the motivation and good self-esteem. If they don't have praise, they will lack the motivation to do anything and could develop low self-worth.
- My mom showed me how to do different chores around the house at a younger age so that I would know how to do them in the future and so that I could help around the house. By doing this, I showed industry because I showed that I was able to help my family.
- "children must learn the productive skills their culture requires or else face feelings of inferiority."

- In this stage, adolescents deal with choosing a job and learning life values. This process continues to build on the prior 4 stages and is the base for dealing hardships of becoming an adult. This stage is where the adolescent is learning their place in society.
- In high school, I learned this when I was in color guard then got a job after I stopped doing color guard. I learned several life lessons from both of these things and learned the value of working to earn my own money. I would solve this with identity because I was never really confused about finding myself.
- "adolescent seeks to develop a coherent sense of self, including the role she or he is to play in society. Also called identity versus role confusion." (246)

- In this stage, young adults must form relationships that are intimate and loving. Failure to form strong relationships can lead to loneliness and isolation. It is very important for people to form relationships that are long-lasting and strong.
- I am currently in this stage with my boyfriend. I have learned so much from being in this relationship. I learned how to better communicate and how to truly be myself. For this stage, I chose intimacy because he has made me a better person.
- "Not until late adolescence or early adulthood do romantic relationships begin to serve the full gamut of emotional needs that such relationships can serve and then only in relatively long-term relationships (Furman & Wehner, 1997)."(278)

- In this stage, adults care for the next generation as well as make positive connections that help others. These adults enjoy feeling useful and accomplished. As we continue to grow, we focus more on family and jobs. If you aren't active with work or a family, people generally become unproductive.
- I have not yet experienced this stage but I think that I would choose generativity because someday I want to have a family of my own and to be able to pass things down to.

- This stage happens in a person's old age when they are looking back on their life. At this point in someone's life, they look back on all of the things that happened in their life a decide if they had a happy life or not. Older people need to look back on their life fulfilled with the life that they lived.
- I haven't reached this stage in life yet but I think that I would choose integrity because I already enjoy looking back at the past and reflecting on everything that has happened.
