  • Poorly built homes unlatched and flipped over in the wind
  • Given thin canvas tents in cold and damp weather, watching elders pass due to this
  • Inuit treated like outsiders on their own land
  • Because greenland provided a fueling stop during the world war, this meant their once used hunting area was unsafe, and their animals would move
  • Forced to move because the danish wanted to place anti ‘aircraft guns’
  • Only given 5% of the original hunting grounds used by Inuit
  • Many died waiting to return 
  • Those who relocated - without being forced - were given new home to compensate

Then in December 1997, the ICC launched a new court case, argued by one of Denmark’s top constitutional lawyers.  Finally on August 20 the appeal court’s justices finally announced their decision saying it was a forced relocation.

    On September 2 Aqqaluk Lynge, the president of the Inuit Circumpolar Conference, received an apology from Poul Nyrup-Rasmussen, the prime minister of Denmark, for the relocation of about 100 residents of Uummannaq in May of 1953 to make way for the Thule U.S. air force base.

    Nyrup Rasmussen said “On behalf of the Danish state I apologize to the Inuit, the population of Thule, and to the whole population of Greenland for the way the decision about the move was taken and carried out”
    He had even apologized in Kalaallisut and said “utatserqatserpunga.”

    The new name that it has received is to be more culturally appropriate and is “rich [in] cultural heritage of Greenland and its people and how important they are to the sustainment of this installation against the harsh environment north of the Arctic Circle.” as per the article. 

    Also as per the artice "Pituffik (pronounced bee-doo-FEEK) is the traditional Greenlandic name of the region where the base is located."

    In 1953 the Inughuit tribe of greenland were order to leave their homeland to make space for a U.S military base and were forbidden to return after they left. They were sent to a barren area in the worlds Northernmost settlement where elders said there wasn’t enough animals to hunt compared to their home.

    The danish gov argued that the tribe requested this move but elders countered that until 1996 when a descendent of the 87 who were moved went to court to be able to return and address the lies.
