Creativity and innovation have become central concepts of our time, although it is not always necessary to innovate disruptively.

Sometimes, achieving good results simply requires doing well what already works.

In education, however, creativity is essential to engage students, achieve pedagogical objectives more effectively, and enrich the learning experience.

Educational innovation must not overlook two key factors:

• The student: understanding and involving them as co-creators in the process.

• Creativity: fundamental to adapting to a changing job market, where new professions constantly emerge.

Creativity should not be confused with originality or eccentricity.

It is not about “thinking outside the box” for its own sake without purpose or value.

Five clarifications:

1. It is not a diagnosis and cannot be scientifically measured with accuracy.

2. It is not humor or the ability to make others laugh.

3. It is not quick wit or spontaneous cleverness.

4. It is not simply artistic talent or manual skills.

5. It is not being restless or hyperactive.

In short: creativity always requires value, usefulness, and discipline.

The concept is relatively modern (creativity added to the Oxford English Dictionary in 1875; creatividad entered the Spanish RAE dictionary in 1984).

It is complex and hard to define, influenced by social, cultural, and educational factors.

Any definition usually includes four dimensions:

• The author

• The product

• The process

• The social and cultural dimension

Creativity emerges from a combination of attitude, aptitudes, techniques, and methods.

Creative results are socially evaluated: in education, it is the teacher who acts as the evaluator.

Mihály Csíkszentmihályi defines creativity as: “a state of consciousness that allows us to generate networks of mental connections in order to identify, pose, and solve problems in a relevant and divergent way.”

Research (R): acquisition of new knowledge.

Development (D): using knowledge to design prototypes or improved processes/products.

Innovation: goes further, applying knowledge and solutions successfully in real contexts.

Action and process that introduces significant changes.

Must bring improvements, be sustainable, and generate value (social or economic).

Innovation is not just improvement; it implies real transformation, with risk and uncertainty.

Purposeful change in teaching and learning practices to improve students’ capacity to act and transform their future.

Alters traditional elements that limit the desire to learn.

Defined as new ideas, processes, or strategies that modify existing practices, methods, or conceptions in education.

Examples: curricular innovation, methodological change, use of ICT, active learning strategies.

Innovation differs from creativity. While creativity is about generating new and appropriate ideas, innovation involves successfully applying them in a real context.

Key differences:

• Creativity = concept (ideas).

• Innovation = process (action, application).

• Creativity is subjective and hard to measure; innovation is objective and measurable through results.

Innovation vs. R&D:

• Research (R): seeks new knowledge.

• Development (D): applies knowledge to create prototypes or improvements.

• Innovation: goes further, applying advances in a viable, sustainable way with real impact.

What innovation is:

• An action and process that introduces significant changes in products, services, processes, or organizations.

• Must be useful, generate improvements, and be sustainable over time.

• Not just incremental improvement: innovation implies transformation and taking risks.
