Before the war started in July 6th 1967, from June to October 1966, an estimated 30,000 Igbos were murdered, resulting in about two million Igbos to flee to eastern Nigeria. September 29th also became known as Black Thursday, because it was considered one of the worst day of the massacres.

The conflict is the Biafran War in Nigeria. The conflict is between Nigeria and the Republic of Biafra, a secessionist state that declared its independence from Nigeria. The Nigerian people had more power than the Republice of Biafra especially due to having more forces. The conflict is mainly ethnic because the Igbos in Biafra felt they could no longer coexist with the interests of Muslim Hausa-Fulanis in Nigeria.

The Biafran war from 67-70 was a Civil War. The Biafran war was a Civil War because the Igbo people of the region Biafra, were fighting northern Nigeria to gain independence as a state, which was unsuccessful.

This proves that the Biafra conflict was a civil war because as seen in the map Biafra is in Nigeria so it was a war between opposing groups of citizens of the same country, Hausa-Fulanis and Igbos both being major ethnic groups in Nigeria. This relates to classification of the two different ethnic groups, The Fulani and the Hausa being mostly Muslim, while the Igbo are mostly Christian. Which brings in some religious tensions between the groups as well.

During the two and half years of the war, there were about 100,000 military losses, and between 500,000 and 2 million Biafran civilians died of starvation. Also, the Nigerian Civil War was one of the first wars in human history to be shown to a global audience. We can infer this was a civil war because the conflict resulted from political, economic, ethnic, cultural, and religious tensions.
