In A Wolf Called Wander by Rosanne Parry, Swift, a young Oregon wolf, seeks to impress his father in hopes of feeding his pack with fresh meat and being stronger than his brother, Sharp. However, when a rival pack arrives, Swift is forced to leave his home. Pushing forward, he travels hundreds of miles each day, desperately wishing to see his family again. Eventually, after traversing across a small part of the Pacific Northwest, he finds a place to call home. In the end, Swift changes his name to Wander and finds a mate to put an end to the recurring theme of loneliness.

An elk is a big symbol, appearing throughout the novel. In the book, elk are Swift and his pack's main food source. Later in the story, Swift hunts elk with his mate. This large, strong animal represents togetherness and community.

"I tumble down in darkness, and when I finally skid to a stop, the night has gone silent, and I am utterly alone" (Parry 96). This quote is important since it emphasizes the theme of loneliness and influences the reader to feel greater joy when Swift finds a partner.

A raven is an important symbol in the plot line. In the story, the ravens lead the native wolves to food or circling vultures.

I made a Text-to-Self connection in A Wolf Called Wander by Rosanne Parry. Swift the wolf loved community and togetherness. His family was extremely close to his heart. When he was separated from his family, he was shot into a deep depression. I felt like that when I had moved to Utah, away from my family and friends. It was the hardest time of my life. Having this connection really helped me understand what Swift was going through.

Throughout the novel, Swift learned that it's better to be with someone than alone as he traveled across the Pacific Northwest. When he found a mate, he had an easier time hunting, whereas before he had almost died trying to hunt by himself. He also proved the saying: "What doesn't kill you makes you stronger" as he became a stronger wolf than he would've been otherwise had the rival wolf pack not invaded.

Swift had always had an enemy in his brother, Sharp, ever since he first opened his eyes. Sharp would boast over the fact that he was the biggest pup in the den and use that advantage to bring his siblings down, whether it be verbal or physical. Swift pushed himself harder each day in hopes of being better than his brother.

Throughout the novel, Swift struggled with loneliness as he was stranded in the desert. The setting was amplifying the recurring theme, and increased Swift's hopelessness. Swift grew stronger because of this, and when he found a mate, the cycle of loneliness ended.
