One of the social and cultural patterns of the German states is they all shared a common language (German). That is one of the few things the states have in common. The German states did this so they could distribute education, communication, and administrate.

Lutheranism

The Northern German states practiced Lutheranism. The beliefs of the Lutherans are the Holy Trinity, divinity of Jesus Christ, and the value of redemption through the trust in Jesus Christ. They shared German Lutheranism and helped spread the Protestant faith in the German states.

Northern and some of central Italian States had periods of foreign control by Spain and Austria. That led to some cultural changes with in the states.

No common law or currency

They had no universal law and currency. This would be problematic in any country because if they have no default laws, that means chaos. No common currency in the 1600-1800s means the economy wouldn't be stable. They will have so many different currencies that to the point trade and selling things would be complicated because if someone has one type of coin and you have a different it will be very difficult to figure out how many coins the both of you are supposed to give.

Rome remained the center of the Roman Catholic Church

Throughout all the changes in Italian states Rome was still the center of the catholic church. Most of the people in the Italian stuck with the catholic church even with all the changes. It stayed the center of Roman Catholic because of the Basilica was built on top of the 1st Roman Pope so it became the center.

Influence from classical civilizations maintained Italy’s position as the cultural center of Europe

The Italian states maintained the center of European culture because they were also where the Renaissance started. They held on to their Roman culture, and it was a prime location, and they required wealth.

German states devastated by 30 year war

The aftermath of the war left Germany's population with a 50% decrease. After all the fighting the lands were bad and crops couldn't be grown because of the torn up soil. Millions of German civilians ended up dying from either famine or diseases because of hardly any farmlands.

The rivalry between Austria and Prussia for political dominance because they wanted supremacy over smaller German states. The rivalry was mainly about major territorial conflicts and economic, cultural, and political aspects.

Italian culture was influenced by foreign control

Italian culture influenced the countries of Spain, Austria, and parts of others that border Italy. It was influenced because of the countries that were controlling the Italian states saw the towns, food, etc. As a result some of the countries liked what they were doing so they took it back with them to their country to show the econmony.
