Scout starts second grade, and Jem starts sixth. On their way home from school one day, they find carved soap with people that resemble them.

"'It's bad children like you makes the seasons change'" (Lee 87).
In chapter 8 of "To Kill A Mockingbird," snow is falling. The snow is a new sight to the kids, causing them to question the fate of the world. Jem and Scout decide that they want to build a snowman, so they go to Ms. Maudie's, a trustworthy neighbor, to transfer some snow from her yard to their own. They bring the it over and build a snowman out of mud and snow. Later that night, Ms. Maudie's home catches on fire. Whilst they are watching the house burn, Scout receives a mysterious blanket. "' You ain't grieving, Ms Maudie? ... Grieving child? Why, I hated that old cow barn. Thought of settin' fire to it a hundred times myself, except they'd lock me up'" (Lee 97).

In chapter 9 of "To Kill A Mockingbird," Scout walks away from a fight for the first time. It is Christmastime in Alabama, and the Finch family visits their relatives. While they are there, Scout gets into a fight with Francis, a family member, because he calls her father a nigger-lover. This fight causes Scout to use some foul language out of anger, which results in a smack from Uncle Jack. After the Finches return home, Scout goes to hide in her room. Uncle Jack walks in and asks for forgiveness. She denies him, but allows him to bandage her split knuckle and admits that she still loves him. ""I shall never marry, Atticus.' 'Why?' 'I might have children'" (Lee 115).
