• Cultural upheaval—the Vietnam War, countercultural movements, and shifting moral values—heightened a sense of dislocation for many Christian families.

• Faith-based response—especially in the Anabaptist peace church tradition—led parents to create private Christian schools where education and discipleship could remain inseparable.

In 1976, a grassroots coalition of parents and community members built the first school building in six weeks, laying the foundation for Shalom Christian Academy. The school became both a refuge from cultural drift and a center for training future generations to live faithfully, seek peace, and serve others.

In 1976, this vision moved from conviction to construction when Shalom Christian Academy was erected in just six weeks in Franklin County, Pennsylvania. A group of committed parents, families, teachers, and administrators came together. They were driven by prayer, sacrifice, and shared purpose to establish a school where education and faith could thrive together.

What began as a response to cultural and legal change became the foundation of a movement. Grounded in the Anabaptist peace perspective, this school emerged as both a refuge from shifting societal values and a launching point for nurturing future generations to live faithfully, seek peace, and serve others in a rapidly changing world.

Shalom Christian Academy (SCA) has long operated under a single leadership model that has grown organically over time. As school evolves, there is a need to transition into a more structured, shared leadership model that strengthens oversight, improves efficiency, and aligns with the spiritual and academic mission of the institution. This project seeks to develop a strategic leadership framework that supports both academic excellence and administrative effectiveness in accordance with the values and goals of a Christian educational institution. As Shalom approaches its 50th year of missional service it is time to adapt to the need and address the gaps in organizational leadership.

Nearly 50 years later, the school has evolved into a complex institution, challenging the traditional single-administrator model. The physical footprint has significantly changed since its founding in 1976. Initially, Shalom was a single-building schoolhouse with six classrooms. A gymnasium was added in 1987, and in 2019, the elementary and middle schools were updated and expanded, including a new all-purpose chapel area. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Shalom's enrollment surged by 37% annually for four years. Post-2021, the focus shifted to the growing needs of secondary students. In 2023, Shalom's board initiated a $10 million expansion plan for the 34-acre main campus, addressing the need for additional secondary classrooms, community spaces, and a two-regulation court gym.

Key pressures include:

• Increased enrollment requiring expanded oversight in academics, student life, and operations.

• Financial complexity involving tuition, donor relations, capital campaigns, and compliance.

• No On-Boarding Program with a larger faculty and staff needing professional development and support this is an area that serves to fortify the mission and vision of SCA.

• Community expectations from parents, alumni, and stakeholders demanding transparency, collaboration, and innovation.

• Strategic vision that extends beyond daily operations to long-term sustainability.

The current model risks overburdening a single leader while limiting the school’s ability to leverage collective expertise.

4. Principles for Reimagined Leadership

Any new leadership framework must remain faithful to the school’s founding DNA: Parent-led, Christ-centered, and Anabaptist in its peace and discipleship orientation.

Guiding principles:

a.     Shared Leadership – Distribute responsibility among specialized leaders while maintaining unity of mission. The shared leadership model places the leadership of the school in the hands of the board, creating a governance structure that balances oversight with operational autonomy. This model distributes authority and responsibility across multiple stakeholders while maintaining clear accountability channels.

b.    Community-Governed – Uphold the historic role of parents in partnering with school teachers, administration and board providing governance and accountability.

c.     Sustainability – Design systems that can adapt to growth and transition smoothly across generations.

d.    Mission Alignment – Ensure leadership structures serve the ultimate goal: nurturing disciples who live faithfully and serve others.

To prepare each student for a life of consequence in the world for the kingdom of God.
