1. School- site autonomy : While specific schools knew what they had to do, they weren't told how they had to do it. The objective was clear, but the task was not otherwise defined. I believe that allowing the school to be responsive to their individual student population's needs and community's concerns resulted in a larger buy-in from all stakeholders.

2. Supports Curriculum Standards: As a teacher I know that "one more thing" on my plate, no matter how important, is difficult to take on and feels like a burden. The way that the MCPS connected the lessons and themes to core subjects and standards helps to recognize that this is not an issue of finding more time to teach students a new skill, but rather use the opportunities at hand to integrate Digital Citizenship in the larger facets of their learning.

3. Many stakeholders: I believe that by engaging Teachers, Principals, Curriculum Specialist, Parents, Guardians, Law Enforcement Officers, PTA, Parent Academies, and students themselves, the district was able to show that they recognize the many stakeholders involved and respect the ideas and perspectives of all those who are effected by negative interactions between students and adults within the district. Currently, the State of Maryland is fourth in states with the highest diversity, according to the U.S. Census. There are around as many African American students as White students, and there are more Hispanic students than either. 1. The Media Specialist/Librarian taking lead: At my school location, the librarian would need quite a bit of training in order to fulfill this position and deliver effective training. While there are some programs or initiatives she spearheads, such as battle of the books, there is very little (if any) lesson teaching that she does. It would be possible, but this is an area I would focus on for our own school and have her perhaps co-host the trainings with the school counselor for at least a year.

2. Culturally Responsive Learning: While at MCPS they do provide resources in different languages for their diverse family population, there is more to culturally responsive teaching than translating messages. I believe that it would be important to discover and discuss the nuances between cultures and their relationship with student autonomy and student choice, in particular on the internet.

3. Accountability/ Evidence: I understood that the Media Specialist would be keeping track of the lessons that had been implemented to students as a way to keep progress known across the school district. However, I wonder what the accountability process looks like. Digital Access: MCPS has distributed 40,000 laptops and continues to distribute more each year. While the efforts are commendable, that is less than half of their students. I believe that they must also have access at school sites if they have been recognized as a "Common Sense School"

2. Digital Commerce: There was no mention of a current focus on digital commerce. I believe that on the High School level, students might apply this in a personal finances class as part of economics. 

3. Digital Communication and Collaboration: The MCPS recognizes that students are engaging with each other online and their efforts toward a Digital Citizenship Plan began in response to negative interactions happening on their web page. Therefore, they guide students towards the healthy way to interact online with others and will also be focusing on balance measures in the future. 

4. Digital Etiquette: The video that was featured on the lesson "Digital Drama Unplugged" showed that the Digital Citizenship Plan at MCPS is focused on how students maintain their culture and behavior toward courtesy, safety, and integrity in all aspects of their lives. 

5. Digital Fluency: There was no evidence of this element in the information that I was presented.

6. Digital Health and Welfare: The district uses their school counselors to effectively teach students lessons and also connects the lesson to the health standards.

7. Digital Law: There was mention that an ELA teacher might connect a lesson on copyright as part of their standards to also meet the plan's needs. Topics such as sexting and cyberbullying and the larger implications and laws or legislation regarding those topics specifically were not discussed. 

8. Digital Rights and Responsibilities: This may be connected to their Social Studies standards. I believe that as an area they highlight, it is possible that the students engage in discussions regarding the rights and responsibilities of citizens in a public and digital space. 

9. Digital Security and Privacy: This was not specifically mentioned, but I believe the Libarian/Media Specialist might teach these in conjunction with the ISTE standards and ALA guidelines.  ]]> 2023-04-17 02:24:38 UTC https://padlet.com/zrosado4/iw5gl27fi4tne5pv/wish/2556232999
