I have had an opportunity to do so many things and grow in my career because I was surrounded by amazing mentors, coaches and leaders and perhaps most of all, have been part of the best HR team in the biz. I was given room to grow and grace to fail from time to time. More than anything though, I was given flexibility to build this career while being a highly involved Mom - never missing a baseball game, serving on every PTA, etc.! I cannot imagine being able to do this anywhere else. I recently lost my dad to cancer and during the months leading up to his passing, it was very important for me to be able to spend the precious days he had left at my parent's house. Being able to work from there several days a week and to be able to support my mom was priceless. And then after, I was able to take time off to assist her in taking care of the business that is always there when you lose a family member. My team pitched in and covered my work and leadership has been amazing in supporting me during this very difficult time. My dad was so proud of my work with DHG and always looked forward to hearing about my day. My outspoken support has often made my family cringe. In the job culture I was raised in, you understood to keep your passion separate from your work life. The unwritten code was you be you but leave it at the door when you come to work.  

Wow things have changed. I am so proud to work for an employer that openly supports a diverse workforce. Being able to connect with folks that I have marched and stood with outside of work inside of DHG is humbling.  There is so much more to learn by engaging and listening with folks who have battled things that I have not experienced. Everyday I know that I am a better person by hearing their stories and learning from them. Thank you DHG for making this our culture, one of respect, inclusion and diversity.  Years ago at a PRIDE parade, I looked on at a huge gathering of TD Bank employees on a float supporting their LGBTQ+ employees. I thought wouldn’t it be awesome if DHG could do that? And now I think, yep we could do that.

But, as much as I enjoyed the technical aspects of taxation, I didn't feel the "traditional" CPA career path calling to me. My passions were a bit different, as I found joy in teaching, innovating processes, project management, implementing change, and (most of all) showing people that tax is both fascinating AND fun! The role I serve in today at DHG is nothing short of a dream, and I am forever indebted to the amazing colleagues that encouraged me, supported me, and made a way. I have always been a driven person and one of my driving factors is knowing that my contribution to the team is valuable. It is really hard when I am aware that I am not excelling and, therefore, not contributing my very best. My start at DHG was that way. I knew that I wasn't performing at a high level, which was baffling to me after having a successful college career. It was also very discouraging. As I was close to giving up, I had a career conversation scheduled and my coach expressed that my strength in taxation for individuals had been recognized and proposed steering my career in that direction. It was a lightbulb moment for me! It had been, to that point, my favorite part of the job. The catch: individual taxation was a minor portion of the work in our office. That meant that I would need to work with other offices that were in need of help. This is when I realized what OneDHG meant: we work together for the common goal of giving our clients the BEST CX experience we can NO MATTER WHERE WE SIT. My career has taken a huge turn for the better because of this and has headed down paths that I could never have foreseen. Being pregnant in a pandemic with no family or friends around (to ensure the safety of all) was one of the hardest things I have ever been through.  Then dealing with the post partum anxiety, depression, physical and emotional toll of being a new parent in a pandemic was overwhelming.  Over the last 7 months, DHG as a whole, has been incredibly supportive - working with me on flexibility within my schedule, the Employee Assistance program, checking in and more.  From HR, to my manager, to co-workers and partners who have all taken the time to check in and make sure I am supported and seeing how the can help.  Having that support and time to ensure my mental and physical health was a priority has helped me be a better worker and a better mom.  So now I get to raise my daughter to care about mental health.  To fight for equality.  To be a voice for good.  And to listen to those who need to be heard.  And for that - I will be eternally grateful.]]> 2021-08-24 14:05:39 UTC https://padlet.com/jessietharrington/iw4tas9351t6uj7t/wish/1693674382 I am better because of flexibility and growth!
