I study Sociology, Media and Communication back home and I did anthropology during my A-levels when I was 18 when I was able to learn a little bit about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture. It was a really interesting topic so when I had the opportunity to study abroad with university, I thought... Where's a better country to learn more about the culture?! I look forward to meeting you all and learning from you guys! :-)

Oh it's working! Hello Hannah and Bek. Its Splithoof here. :) I am always interested in my fellow students as I find what our majors are and our reasons for taking the classes to be interesting and valuable. Seeing how other students will use the knowledge to pursue their goals. I'm curious to see how the Indigenous Knowledges courses are implemented in other students work such as Hannah's music or Bek's writing. I'm also very glad for those in the medical industry who have realized the importance of relating to indigenous health. My main goal with the class personally was to connect to the culture I once felt was so similar to my own. But now, thanks to this class, I've been wondering if our shared Knowledges is based on what happened to us and not who we are as a people. It's something I hope to unpack over this course. What colonisation has done to indigenous perceptions of other indigenous peoples is of interest to me. Edit: after i posted I can't read anyone else's post anymore so I hope I didn't accidentally delete something. Yikes.

I actually find it rather difficult to connect what I am learning in this course with my career as an actress. Obviously, it can always make us more considerate and sensitive to Indigenous, and all other, cultures and people in the work place. But it's not like I'd ever be asked to, or even accept the opportunity to, portray an Indigenous character because it is not in my heritage and I wouldn't want to take that opportunity away from a performer who is. However, my degree back in London is Acting and World Theatre. Which means we spend a lot of time exploring storytelling and performance in different cultures around the world. So, while I am in Australia, I'm keen to discover some Indigenous playwrights and maybe even catch a performance. If anybody has some good recommendations, let me know :)
-Jules

Just a reminder r*skins, even though a lolly in Australia, is a racist slur against indigenous Americans. If I could stop hearing it said casually in class by students and not in a learning context, that would really help me feel safer in this group.
