  • Seat new students with a buddy who can aid with translation, or at least with classroom routines
  • Ensure signs are posted with visuals with common phrases/expressions around the room
  • Start with the basics and allow for lots of adjustment time (commonly used expressions : "Hello, my name is, I don't understand, etc.)
  • Give the student a picture dictionary, a visual schedule, and an index for new vocabulary words
  • Label classroom objects
  • Use the information from the initial assessment to help with starting points, unit themes, etc.
  • Create open-ended assignments and choice boards that reflect unique talents, strengths and interests
  • Allow the use of the L1, students can then begin to create bilingual projects
  • Have additional supports in place to assist with translation (e.g., dictionaries, iPads to use wordreference or Google read and write, etc.
  • Incorporate images and examples of linguistic and cultural diversity into all subjects in the curriculum

  • Incorporate cultural content from the ELLs background and celebrate traditions/holidays
  • Use gestures, visual cues, and MODELLING
  • Multicultural Mondays: Encourage students to share about their unique backgrounds/cultures - this will empower ELLs the opportunity to share their identities and educate their classmates
  • Create bilingual texts/pieces and display them so students can view them
  • Allow for lots of time for group work/ team-building activities (ex: KAGAN structures) that encourage communication and cooperation

  • Share support/resource materials that are available within the community and make sure the resources are available in multiple languages (can be through online translation)
  • Send out a welcoming letter/email with images/simple phrasing and have them indicate which language(s) they can speak to help with translation
  • Invite the family in for a meet and greet with administration 
  • Make connections with a family member, family friend, or member of the school who can assist with translation 
  • Ensure interpreters are available if needed
  • Coordinate a welcoming and informative orientation session
  • Share information about school policies, clubs, extracurriculars, procedures and agendas

  • Ensure there are ELL friendly clubs/activities
  • Create a club dedicated to multiculturalism
  • Post welcoming signs/common expressions in multiple languages
  • Display bilingual student work
  • Read the date and prayer over the announcements in a different language every day
  • Allow access to resources/technology that will help with transitioning (ex: chrome books, iPads, for translation, extending the hours of the library so that parents can utilize it).
