         <description><![CDATA[<ul><li>Integrated STEM instruction which includes connections between math, science, engineering, and other content areas in the form of projects or design-based tasks increases student interest and motivation.</li><li>It sounds like most students enjoyed the activities and were motivated to learn about design.</li><li>By not providing step-by-step instructions to students, they learned how to problem solve and devise their own solutions to real world problems, which normally can be resolved through any number of ways. This also forced students to learn from their failures and persist in their problem solving.</li></ul><div><br><br></div>]]></description>

         <title>How I might incorporate this practice into my own classroom</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Although my content area will be mathematical in nature, I believe that some of the principles in this article can still be incorporated into my own classroom. For example, instead of resorting to traditional lecture-based lessons and assignments which solely assess procedural fluency, I could think about mathematical concepts and skills which can be combined into a several week long project. I know that there are many real world applications which are linked to multiple mathematical concepts. I'm personally not very familiar with project-based learning (PBL) in Math classrooms but I've heard of the Dream House project (see left) in which students design what the floor plans of their dream house would look like given certain cost and area limitations. This also allows students to practice allocating their resources and money in the most efficient manner.    </div>]]></description>

         <title>Critiques/Information to consider before implementation</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Project-based activities have much educational value in that they stimulate learning and student engagement, which are both things that teachers seek to cultivate in their classrooms. However, one thing to consider before implementing this project is how it would align with the Math curriculum and sequencing plan. Generally, a certain number of days are allocated to certain standards and objectives. Because a project may end up taking multiple days or even multiple weeks, it's critical to flesh out how the project will look, how students will interact with it, and how their mathematical knowledge will be broadened. Without careful planning before implementation, teachers may leave students floundering about and perhaps even more confused than before while using up precious class time.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>The 5 E's</strong></div><ul><li>ENGAGEMENT: Students were confronted with the problem of how to improve the design of a race car to make it more aerodynamic on a track.</li><li>EXPLORATION: Students compared how the shape affected the performance and speed of the car.</li><li>EXPLANATION: Aerodynamics was defined and used to explain why box-style shapes did not perform as well as others.</li><li>EXTENSION: Under certain constraints and limitations, students were tasked with creating a more aerodynamically efficient car shell.</li><li>EVALUATION: Formative and summative assessments were utilized through written reflection questions and presentations documenting the process and takeaways. <br><br></li></ul>]]></description>
