It encompasses any item, piece of equipment, software program, or product system designed to enhance the functional capabilities of individuals with disabilities. This technology ranges from simple, low-tech aids like magnifying glasses and canes to advanced solutions such as speech recognition software and prosthetics.

The primary goal of assistive technology is to improve the independence and quality of life for individuals with disabilities by enabling them to perform tasks that might otherwise be challenging or impossible. This includes support in areas such as mobility, communication, hearing, vision, and self-care. Assistive technology is vital in promoting inclusion and participation in various aspects of life, including education, employment, and social activities.
