Insight:
The death of Gatsby was the end of his life and the end of his dream. "He devoted himself to a broad, vulgar and gaudy beauty". At the same time, it also implies the blind pursuit of dreams by American young people at that time. In the American society at the time, money was Paramount and class was rigid. The lower class, even the nouveau riche, could not be accepted if they wanted to join the upper class. I believe that nowadays quality of life is more important than economic and technological growth. The technological changes of the past five centuries have been accompanied by significant increases in people’s living standards(Bowles,S.,Edwards,R.,&Roosevelt,2005,pp.8-9). Perhaps in the past, the progress of these two would have a great impact on the quality of life, however, now that the economy and technology have developed to a certain extent, the impact of economic and technological growth on the quality of life has gradually been weakening. Talking about it from the perspective of equality, as the gap between the rich and the poor gets bigger and bigger with the economic growth, it will lead to more inequality. As reported by Wetherly and Otter (2011,p.341), the source of this growth was the ability of capitalists to exploit their workers and as growth and wealth increased the conditions of workers would deteriorate. So I prefer to focus on quality of life and equality.
