As of this point in time, Nick has heard little truth about his neighbor. At his house party, guests told him rumors that he was a murderer or a cousin of German Kaiser Wilhelm II. On the car ride into New York for lunch with Gatsby, he tells Nick that he was the son of a rich family from San Franciso, which he calls the mid-west, who was educated at Oxford before moving around Europe's capitals living lavishly. After the outbreak of WWI, he claims to have enlisted in the Army and served as the first lieutenant of a machine gun company that advanced far behind enemy lines at Argonne, killing three German divisions in two days. He also claimed to receive recognition from every Allied government, including Montenegro for his actions. According to Jordan Baker, Jay met Daisy while they were both in Louisville in 1917, Gatsby there for army training. However, he soon left for Europe and mysteriously did not return for years. During this period, Daisy married Tom and moved to New York. Gatsby bought his house across the bay just to be near her and throws parties every week in hopes that she would show up.

"Major Jay Gatsby, I read, For Valour Extraordinary. 'Here’s another thing I always carry. A souvenir of Oxford days. It was taken in Trinity Quad—the man on my left is now the Earl of Dorcaster.'" (72)

"‘Right you are,’ agreed the policeman, tipping his cap. ‘Know you next time, Mr. Gatsby. Excuse ME!’ ‘What was that?’ I inquired. ‘The picture of Oxford?’ ‘I was able to do the commissioner a favor once, and he sends me a Christmas card every year.'" (74)
