Bella has just arrived from her small hometown in Italy and is trying to raise money for her family back home. Yetta is a girl who works at the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory and goes on strikes for Shirtwaist workers and their rights. Jane is a rich girl who has been going to women's rights meetings. 

In this book, relationships affect all of the main characters. One example of this is Bella's relationship with Yetta and Jane, and how when she learned that her family is dead Jane was there to offer sanctuary. After she leaves Jane's house, Yetta tells her she can live with her and her sister. This is shown when the author states, "'You can come live with Rahel and me,' Yetta said. 'Girls like us, we stick together'" (Haddix 165). This shows the relationship between Bella and Yetta and that she still has people who care about her even though her family is gone. 

Another example of how relationships can affect people is the relationship between Yetta and her older sister, Rahel. Yetta loves her sister but their relationship got more challenging when Rahel gets married and goes to work for her husband. Then Yetta finds out that Rahel is going to have a baby, and is upset because of how tight they are with money. Even though they have their ups and downs, they still are family and care about each other. 

The final example is Jane's relationship with her father and how she feels like she has no free will and runs away from home. This is shown after Jane leaves home and finds Bella and Yetta and states, "My father is an evil man, and I never knew it until your strike. It's all wrong -- everything I have was bought with blood -- I can't go back, I can't" (Haddix 206). After this, Yetta and Bella invite Jane to live with them and do what they can to comfort her. This shows just how good of friends Jane has and what they do for her even though they come from completely different backgrounds. Jane learns a lot about herself through all of this and becomes stronger and more independent. In conclusion, relationships affected all of the characters in many different ways throughout the book which caused the characters to grow and change.

They're different because in the book "Uprising" the relationship that happens here is when Bella moves to New York to provide money for her family back home in Italy. The relationship in Escape From East Berlin is the relationship between Marta, Johann, and Stefan, when Stefan passed it really affected her.

They're alike because in "Uprising" Bella learns that her family died and she was grieving and her friends who were there to comfort her. Similarly, in "Escape From East Berlin" Marta's friend passed Stefan and this really affected her and her friend and family comforted her.

In conclusion, both of these stories have their differences and similarities in the relationships of the characters.

The article, "Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire", states that "Those workers who were on floors above the fire, including the owners, escaped to the roof and then to adjoining buildings." (History.com). This is also what happens in "Uprising". The book states that about 30 to 40 people from the higher floors made it to the roof, including the owner, Mr. Blanck. Once they were up there they climbed up the building and onto the roof of the building next door. It starts off by talking about the working conditions and how the factory would employ immigrant women. Nearly all of the factory workers were girls that did not know English and were forced to work 12 hours a day, every day. The day that the fire started only one of the four elevators was working, and they were only able to make four trips to get people out before the elevator broke down. There were only two other exits and one of them was locked. Many of the girls died that day trying to escape. Some jumped into the elevator shaft, others died when they tried to escape down the stairs and the door was locked, and others jumped out windows only to die after they fell. Those on the upper floors, including the bosses, were able to escape to the roof and make it to another building. In the end, 146 people died from the fire.
