The contrast between the her and her nine year old self is very different, it's as if she is a different person , we can tell this when the poem says ' I'd like to say that we'd be friends, but the truth is we have nothing in common'.

I like the quote "You would rather run than walk, rather climb than run, rather leap from a height than anything". This line is read in a fluctuating way because it speeds up with the repetition of "rather", and slows down with the pause of the comma which makes it stand out.

I think this poem is about a woman who does not have peace within herself as its shows when she says 'we' referring to present her and 9 year old her. She has not yet moved on from this specific age. However in the end she finally does let her 9 year old self go, by saying ' i leave you' she no longer referrs to her past as 'we'

Many people think this is quite a relatable poem but we mustn't forget that this was chosen to feature in the AS Lit syllabus for young people.

Perhaps instead of regretting the beginning of our lives, this poem can show us that childhood doesn't last long and we should make the most of it.

I feel that the poet can only fully appreciate her childhood after she compares it to the life of an adult.
