In this section, Annmarie was not able to run. She and her family, and Ellen, were caught off guard by the soldiers in their home. Prev scenes - Annmarie was able to run away from the soldiers
This section, she, Ellen and her family were trapped and caught off guard by the soldiers who came into their house. Annemarie's mother had sent her to deliver the lunch basket to her uncle when she met the soldiers. She was frightened but she knew she had to hide the fears and have the courage to carry out the errand her mother had sent her. 
As such, she had to behave like Kristi, courageous and bold towards the soldiers in order to do what her mother had assigned her to.

Her quick-thinking nature is evident here. 
At the start, she despised her sister. However, slowly her perspective changed and she fell back to Kristi to find strength during tough times. (Chapter 14, pg 107 - when she was running and the Little Red Riding Hood story came to her mind). 
This event showed how she is also calm in the face of challenges - unusual for a child of that age to be so calm and quick thinking when faced with Nazi soldiers. This event showed Anne Marie how serious the reality is now

- In the beginning of the text, Annemarie saw Ellen as a ten year old girl, similar to her and not associating her as someone from a different religion.

- At the start, Annemarie saw the presence of the Nazi soldiers as non-threatening as just being part of the landscape. After the incident where Ellen had to be hidden, she realized the gravity of the situation and knew that she had to be quick to react. Eventually she became more reflective and matured in her responses to the Nazi soldiers.
