As the sun peeked through my leaves, I saw a group of children running into the park with bright smiles and curious eyes. They laughed, played, and explored every corner of Greenie. But then, something unusual caught my eye.

One of the children had a strange-looking object in their hand—a small shovel. I watched carefully as they gathered around a patch of soil not too far from my roots. At first, I worried they might harm the plants nearby. But to my surprise…

They all excitedly placed that sapling in the soil, covered its roots nicely and watered it with the watering can they had brought with them. My heart was filled with joy! These children had not come to harm Greenie, but to make her even more beautiful. They posed happily next to the new sapling and even gave her a name: Little Leaf.

There was a village on the shores of a small but azure lake in the Aegean Region of Turkey, surrounded by lush forests. The name of this village was Gölcük. Gölcük, famous for its lake like its name, was a natural wonder where birds stayed on the migration route, decorated with lotus flowers. The children who lived in the village loved nature very much. Every day after school, they would go to the lakeside, observe the birds, name the trees, make games out of stones. But in recent years, some people who came to picnic by the lake left their garbage, plastic bottles got into the water, some trees were cut down. One day 5 of Gölcük Elementary School. Zeynep, a class student, was very upset when she saw plastic bags floating in the lake. "Nature is our home, why do we pollute it?" said. He shared this topic with his teachers. Their teachers said that the students could do something to protect the environment. Then Zeynep and her friends started a project: ”Green Lake Movement". First thing, they cleaned up the lakeside. They put gloves on their hands, took their bags, made the surroundings of the lake sparkling. Then they announced a “Nature Volunteer Day” every week. They prepared posters to inform the villagers, made presentations about water conservation and recycling. But this story did not end there. Their teachers have involved them in an international project called eTwinning to further spread this exemplary behavior of Gölcük children. Now they could talk about nature conservation not only in their villages, but also with their peers in Europe. They were exchanging ideas with children from Germany, Greece, Italy and preparing a common digital nature diary. Zeynep's dream had come true. Because now there was a team that protected not only the lake, but the whole world. And it all started with the love in the heart of a child, by a small lake...

From that moment on, Greenie and Little Leaf became even more special places for the children. Inspired by what they had done, they promised to visit often and take care of every plant and animal they saw.

Meanwhile, far away in Gölcük, Zeynep and her friends continued their mission with great excitement. One sunny afternoon, as part of their international eTwinning project, they decided to create a special video message about their efforts and send it to other children around the world. The message reached many countries, including a school near Greenie Park. When the children who had planted Little Leaf saw the video, their faces lit up with joy. They realized that there were other kids just like them, working hard to protect nature. The two groups began writing letters to each other, sharing stories about their favorite trees, lakes, and animals. They even planned to meet one day—to plant trees together, hand in hand, by the lake and in the park.Tilly the Tree watched from her place in Greenie with pride. The wind rustled gently through her branches as she whispered, “Even the smallest hands can plant seeds of great change.”And as new letters were written and more children joined their mission from different corners of the world, something magical began to happen—something that would change not just their parks and lakes, but maybe even the whole planet.Because this was only the beginning.Somewhere, in a quiet forest or a crowded city, a child watched the video and decided to pick up a shovel. Another child looked at a tree and wondered how old it might be. A classroom in Spain painted posters about protecting rivers, while a school in Kenya started a butterfly garden.Zeynep and her friends began planning a big event: an international Nature Friendship Festival, where children from every participating country would come together, either online or in person, to share ideas, sing songs, and plant seeds. Greenie and Gölcük would be sister parks—linked by the children who loved them.As spring arrived, both places bloomed not only with flowers but with hope.Tilly the Tree stood tall in the soft morning light, listening to the laughter of children and the promise of more to come. She knew the story wasn't over.

It was growing—branch by branch, heart by heart...

Weeks passed, and the letters between Gölcük and Greenie Park kept coming. Each envelope carried tiny surprises—pressed flowers, hand-drawn animals, or even dried leaves from special trees. Zeynep sent a photo of the lake at sunset, while Ayla from Greenie drew a picture of Tilly the Tree with a big smile on her trunk. One day, during an online video call, both groups had an idea at the same time.“What if we all plant the same kind of tree on the same day?” Zeynep asked.“Yes! A Friendship Tree Day!” shouted Mark from Greenie Park. They began making plans—choosing a tree that could grow in many climates, designing small flags to place beside them, and inviting even more children from new countries. As the call ended, Tilly's leaves danced in the breeze. She could feel the excitement buzzing in the air.Somewhere in Gölcük, the wind picked up, carrying the same feeling to another old tree by the lake.Something was coming. Something wonderful...
