Achilles, like the man in the water, rather than going home on his boat, decides to risk his life to retrieve the body of his fallen companion. Achilles is not concerned with his own death as stated when he proclaims, "Then let me die, since I could not prevent the death of my companion. he's fallen far from his homeland. He needed me there to protect him from his own destruction. So now, since I'm not returning to my own dear land, and for Patroclus was no saving light or for my many comrades," (Homer 113) Achilles decides to stay and fight for his people. Both the man in the water and Achilles were willing to risk their lives for their people.

Is the Man in the Water Heroic?
Yes, the Man in the Water is very heroic, as he saved many people's lives in dire times of need. In addition, he cared less for his own well-being and, instead, prioritized the lives and safety of the other passengers.
How does he fit Heroism?
The Man in the Water acted completely selflessly, and although he probably knew he was moments from death, he continued to help others live on.
