Moishe is one of the first to witness the horrors of the Holocaust. When he returns to Sighet, no one believes him when he speaks of the violence he witnessed. They call him crazy. However, it is clear that Moishe, who was once an extremely religious man, has lost faith. Eliezer explains how, "Moishe was not the same. The joy in his eyes was gone. He no longer sang. He no longer mentioned God or Kabbalah" (Wiesel 7). This quote illustrates how witnessing the Holocaust affected Moishe's faith. The fact that he, "no longer mentioned either God or Kabbalah" shows his struggle to comprehend how God could allow such violence to happen.
