To find the theme, ask yourself: 
What does the author want me to understand or take away from this work? 

What does the author want me to know about love or friendship?

When he returns to Sighet, no one believes him when he speaks of the violence he witnessed. They call him crazy. However, it is clear that Moishe, who was once an extremely religious man, has lost faith. Eliezer explains how, "Moishe was not the same. The joy in his eyes was gone. He no longer sang. He no longer mentioned God or Kabbalah" (Wiesel 7). This quote illustrates how witnessing the Holocaust affected Moishe's faith.
