Winston Smith

Winston Smith, The main character is a record editor, an important quote from Smith is, " If the party could thrust it's hands into the past and say of this or that event, it never happened - that surely was more terrifying than torture or death." This shows that he is more afraid of the party than he is of death. Another quote from Smith is, "Do it to Julia! Do it to Julia! Not me! Julia! I don't care what you do to her! Tear her face off, strip her to the bones. Not me! Julia! Not me!" this shows that Winston is not as caring as he seems. Winston is a character who cares about his work, but not anything else really. He is scared more about the government more than death. He is so brainwashed by the propaganda that his life is that much more important than his opposed lover.

Julia is Winston Smith's lover. She is along with Winston out of their love nest to a headquarters. "Confession is not betrayal. What you say or do doesn’t matter, only feelings matter. If they could make me stop loving you – that would be the real betrayal." Julia is talking to Winston about loyalty and betrayal, this shows that she cares about her relationship with Winston. "It was something in your face. I thought I'd take a chance. I'm good at spotting people who don't belong. As soon as I saw you I knew you were against them." This quote shows that Julia is confident in her abilities. These quotes show that even while living with a totalitarian government, Julia is a strong confident women.

Totalitarian Government

A totalitarian government is where the government has total control over all the people. The government has control of public and private life. The party is the ruler of the government in the book 1984, the party has complete control over Winston, Julia and the rest of the people in Oceania. Also, the thought police take people away in the middle of the night if they think the government is doing something bad in any way. The author is showing just how bad a totalitarian dystopian society really is.

Theme

The theme in this story is, 'don't always believe the propaganda you are told.' I say this because the party's rule was affected by the propaganda they spread. All of the information comes from the ministry of truth, which is ironically ruled by the party's totalitarian rulership. Also the two-minute hate is propaganda along with hate week. Posters of big brother are also propaganda. These examples of propaganda really do help the party stay in control. The party isn't the best government to listen to and the characters shouldn't listen to the propaganda that the party puts out there

Ideal Society

My ideal society is a society where the government is a republic. I like this type of government because I've lived with it my whole life and I like the way it works. People have some say but so does the government. I would also want my society to be technologically advanced, but not too much. I wouldn't want people to have chips in their heads, but I would want them to have advanced cellphones and other types of entertainment devices. I would also want my society to be a very smart society, they should all be able to get a graduates degree without too much difficulty. These people should also be physically fit they shouldn't all be super strong or fast, but some should be.Therefore my ideal society should be a great working society, and a good society to live in.
