Because Nevada is a desert state, many projects of the new deal focused on water retention. Virginia Lake Park was constructed as “both a recreational site and serves as a detention reservoir for flood control and irrigation” (Living New Deal, n.d.). "Thanks in part to night work crews, the WPA quickly created what became known as Virginia Lake Park south of Reno" (Myers, 2008). The lake was created for swimming and is on average 5.5’. Currently the lake includes pedestrian/bicycle paths, park and recreation facilities and typically is stocked with fish.

The site provided the community with a recreational outlet for enjoyment and family time. Furthermore it improved the visual appeal of the area, as Nevada was historically barren at the beginning of the new deal.
