Medicaid, Food Stamps, and Unemployment

If my company had to down size and I lost my job I would probably need to cut expenses and look into Medicaid and food stamps depending on how bad my financial situation is. Medicaid is program provided by the government to provide health information for adult and children with finically limitations and limited resources. Food stamps is a program that provides food purchasing assistance for people with little or no income. Some programs that help people who can’t find jobs are American Job Centers, Disaster Unemployment Assistance, and Job Accommodation network. The requirements to receive unemployment are that your employer took taxes out of your pay check and reports your income on a W-2 tax form, earned at least 2500 in wages over 18 months, file a claim in the state you worked in, are unemployed or work fewer than 32 hours a week, earn less than the weekly amount of unemployment pay, and you are able or available to work. To continue to receive unemployment you have to keep all of these requirements and show that you are active looking for jobs.

https://www.benefits.gov/news/article/320

https://ehsd.org/cash-aid-medi-cal-
calfresh-food-stamps/

https://cdle.colorado.gov/eligibility-and-work-search-requirements

Concluding Thoughts About Project

This experience taught me that there are many costs to living on your own. In addition to that all of the little costs add up so having a budget for the month is a good idea so that you don’t spend more money then what you have. Also there are many hidden fees and taxes that I didn’t know about that impacted the activities and things I was able to afford. This experience helped me realize that I should start saving money now because it will better me in the future. Additionally a good idea to save money is to look for summer jobs or part-time jobs so I can save money so I’m able to afford things in the future. I also realized that looking for scholarships for college is very important because without scholarships college is extremely expensive and taking out a big student loan can impact what I can do in the future. This also opened my eyes to the fact I’m not gonna be able to depend on my parents forever and that I need to start planning early so I’m not dependent on them forever. For example I can not only rely on my parents for the cost of college or living expenses so I need to make a plan on how I’m going to afford all of these expenses. In addition to that this brought to light how much money is taken out of our paychecks because of taxes and that’s the advertised amount of money a company shows you is not what your are going to be taking home, and that you need to budget off of the money you get after taxes (net income). Equally important, the cost of living on your own is much less than living on your own with kids, so this made me realize it’s a good idea to wait to have kids until I’m financially stable and have two incomes coming in instead of one. This will benefit me and my children because I will be able to provide a better quality of life for my kids and me. Moreover if I was in financial trouble I would have to research things like Medicaid and food stamps in order to be able to pay all of my expenses and stay healthy. Also, it’s important to collect unemployment if I have been let go so I can find another job and not have to worry as much about how I’m going to manage in the meantime. Overall this project taught me that you have to prepare for life and you can’t always depend on your parents for money and that there are many hidden fees that arise once you start paying your own bills.
