Catherine of Aragon, daughter of Spain’s King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella, was Henry VIII’s first wife. Married in 1509, she had previously been wed to Henry’s brother, Arthur. Catherine and Henry had one child, Mary (born 1516), but the lack of a male heir led Henry to seek an annulment. When the Pope refused, Henry broke with the Roman Catholic Church, divorced Catherine, and founded the Church of England, marking the start of the Reformation.

Previously a lady-in-waiting to Catherine of Aragon and Anne Boleyn, Jane gave birth to Edward VI on October 12, 1537. Tragically, she died weeks later from childbirth complications and was buried at St. George’s Chapel, as per Henry’s wishes, to rest beside him.
